It's giving me an retro vectrex vibe when playing it on the iCade .

I just found out the Raiden fighters collection and Shogun also work .

Anyway to update the 3dsxl firmware offline? It really doesn't like my broadband connection for some reason...

They are dumping these for € 39,99 on here with free shipping :

    http://www.iononline.nl/icade.html

Works pretty nicely with my iPad mini, not with the CAVE games though as they have to support Bleutooth
I just downloaded Plasma Sky and it's awesome, the buttons are a bit stiff but the stick is pretty good .

If you've a jailbroken iPad you can get mods to allow you to play any game with the iCade(some work well, others not so much).

Also, upgrade those buttons and stick like I did ;0)

Probably a good idea as I still have lots of spare parts laying about .
What stick did you use to replace the stock one ?

You don't need a jailbroken iPad anymore, Mame is available and called Gridlee, a team used a work around, selling the public domain game Gridlee but not mentioning that it was running on Mame, and an updated Mame at that.
You can use a file manager program to side load the appropriate game files in to play any game you like, with icade support.

    Oops.
Looks like Gridlee was taken down, in the US at least.

Yes, but you need a jailbroken iPad to use the iCade with unsupported games(not talking emulators here).

I used a modified Sanwa JLF stick (not sure exact model).
I had to 3D print some supports for it to get it to sit proper inside the case and use a little Sugru as well.

Any chance you're on UPC ? I notice recently they turned on my routers firewall and it was blocking my 3dsxl from updating. Once I disabled it the 3dsxl had no issue.

Same here. UPC user & the 3DS and XL won't download anything while the firewall is on

yup - I always had it disabled, as it screws up some games on the PC - anyway, sometime in December it magically turned itself back on and was only when I went to update the 3DSXL did I notice it.

UPC are always pushing bloody firmware updates out and seem to hold some settings and reset others. Pain in the ar$e it is.
Cant really beat their speeds though :)

Lovely MVS pick up this morning. Just opened up and all originals too :)

    DSC_0544_zpsb2558c18.jpg

I've been after Pulstar for years now. When I opened it up there was a dead spider inside! Little fecker had taste.

This was unexpected, check out the serial number on Puzzle Bobble 2. I wouldn't be one of those loons who purposely goes out looking for low serial games, but can definitely appreciate a low one when it comes along..and this is crazy low.

    DSC_0546_zps654c8027.jpg

PCB came with it too, a fairly unknown Namco Shmup called Nebulas Ray.

    DSC_0548_zps094b911b.jpg

Down side, came as non working. It just boots to the warning screen in dodgy colours and that's it.

Fairly easy to figure out what's wrong, leaky hairy caps!

    cap1_zpsf8df463b.jpg

Check out what this little ****er has done to the underside of the jamma connector, corrosion right through to the pins on the other side.

    cap2_zpsac9bee19.jpg

There's another bulging cap too. I think I'll remove them and neutralize the pcb with some baking soda before trying to convince someone to see if they can mend the traces... :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭Casey120

Nebulas Ray is a notorious troublesome board even when it looks perfect .
Otoh , there's is no good emulation as the mame version misses the whole front layer of scrolling stars which makes the game especially awesome looking .
A lot of players hate how the game counter scrolls opposite to your horizontal movements but I personally like it .

I hope you get it working !

A lot of that above corrosion turned out to be rust, it came off with a toothbrush. The underside of the jamma edge almost looks 100% okay now. Traces are actually alright, thank feck.

Also managed to get the game booting. It wasn't booting before because the dip settings didn't match a jumper pin setting. Basically region security.

Doesn't coin up now though for some reason and there's no sound. Not sure if the lack of sound has to do with the no coining or if that's a separate issue.

Still, nice to see the game running! One step at a time. The caps still definitely need to be replaced.

Mame version has sound before coin up so something flaky with your board alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭Casey120

How are the caps next to the sound amp ?

Those ones actually look okay when compared to the other bulging ones! Very strange. I guess you can't always tell by visual inspection.

Ive an Mortal Kombat 3 board that has a crackling sound running over the normal sound of the game. Any ideas what i should look out for? ive never had to look at this sort of thing before. Sorry for jumping in on the conversation, the sound talk just reminded me of it.

Check the capacitors around where the sound amp is. Some of them might look nasty, furry and discoloured where they connect to the board.

    Badcaps-tayeh-4.jpg

    Also look for bulging.

    capblown_3.jpg

Caps that look fine can still be leaking underneath where you can't see.

Don't you need to be jailbroken to run a file manager anyway, or is there an alternative to iFile that can do it without the jailbreak?

No, there are several that I've seen that work with non jailbroken iOS devices.
I'm sure I may be wrong.
Not a big fan of Apple, which is ironic given my username!

    Good luck :)

I think I'm going to buy a half decent iron and try my hand at soldering again. Replacing caps seems like something I really should be able to do at this stage!

yeh seems easy enough! Though i did butcher a sega gamegear before..

Good thinking. Not something I would have thought of but got a new router from them recently so the firewall is more than likely enabled.

    Thanks for the head's up!

Now the long wait for the charger, docking station and a few games to arrive.

Heh, were there many caps on that?

A lot of the boards I have seem to just have three to four big, radial caps. They have longish legs so there doesn't seem to be anything too fiddly. Just stick the legs through, bend off the ends and apply a bit of solder.

By the way, has anyone ever received this message when bidding on something?

PCB seller in Korea, ships internationally, but something wrong with me apparently...

Your problem is not ordering from Best Korea.

Seen that before with a UK seller, basically they'd 'closed' up for the Xmas so weren't taking bids on anything.

Interesting, this is a live auction which ends in 9 hours. (and there are bids on some of their other items)

    snip

If someone fancies bidding $50 for me, feel free :D
