    Good news.

Only cheap, fourth-rate countries don't have an embassy to the Holy See.

Not looking to stir it up at all - good man.

    You've a source for this?

Good to see that they have opened an embassy in Croatia.

I thought After Hours was the place for a bit of craic. I believe what I said though. It did not reflect well on us (that we didn't have an Embassy at the Holy See).

It's only plans to re-open the embassy by the summer, it isn't actually open yet.

Well, if some parties would get their hands off the swiss guardsmens arses for a moment and agree that its expensive and unnessecary to run both an Italian and a Vatican embassy, it would never have closed.

    All our problems are over.

The Italian/Irish embassy is only 4 km away from Vatican City. I really don't see why they need a separate embassy.

Makes them feel big and needed, like one of the big boys.

They'd be better off reopening the embassy in Tehran.. where one is actually needed for diplomatic reasons rather than just to appease a specific group.

Won't someone think of the Papal Orders?

But the Italian Embassy wasn't an Embassy to the Holy See.

Representation in the Holy See diplomatic corp is important in terms of Irish soft power and influence around the world.

How so? Which governments are less likely to talk to the Irish government if they don't have an embassy to the Holy See?

But it's not even a proper country, so Ireland as a nation doesn't need any representation there. Religious folk here are already represented in the Vatican. That's why things like bishops and cardinals are appointed.

Oh, has the RCC finally provided full cooperation regarding that whole "priests raping children and trying to cover it up when caught, then refusing to pay compensation" thing? Finally, some good news.

    Ireland;

Hey, I may be cheap and fourth-rate, but I'm not..................what was that last thing you said?

The Holy See is right (from their point of view) not to accept ambasadors who are also ambasadors to Italy. If they conceded that point, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

For comparisons sake, we don't maintain a embassy in New Zealand, a country of 4.3 million people and many Irish expats. Instead we only maintain a consulate, which is just a branch of the Irish embassy in Australia.

However it is for some reason vital to have a embassy to a country of 800 people?
