I've never thought so - I only really go to the movies when there's something out that I really want to see, so not having my friends or OH distracting me while I'm watching it is generally a plus in my book. Tend to go in the morning or early afternoon when the place is generally empty so I have my pick of seats and there's a lessened chance of gobsh*tes or little scrotes disturbing me while I'm trying to pay attention to the film.

Bliss - or maybe I'm just an anti-social cnut! :pac:

What do ye reckon AH, is the cinema a valid solo experience or do you judge the loners sitting on their own in such places?

If you're touching yourself, then it's creepy.

Bliss. If I really want to enjoy a film or play or concert, I go by myself. Don't want anyone near me when I'm (ideally) completely engrossed.

Hey OP, maybe we should go out some time. Oh, wait... :)

Depends which cinema you will be attending, as in does the kiosk sell popcorn or tissues and ky jelly?

You're never on your own once you've got a dirty mac.

Watching a film in a very quiet auditorium is an extremely anti-social activity, so in my opinion, not being able to go to the cinema alone is what's weird.

(It's not weird btw to go to the cinema with someone else, but it is weird IMO to find the idea of going alone unfathomable).

    I prefer it.

Year long thread in the film forum on it.

It's more weird to attend with people I think.

I always felt it was a kind of odd to go to a place with people where it meant you couldn't speak to them when there, all that much at least.

Depends on the movie too I think. Comedies suit a group of 4-5 friends going out for a night bit with other genres, a quiet late night showing of a harrowing drama suits a visit to the cinema all by your lonesome

If asked people will say yes but nobody actually cares

Or if you try touching others it is creepier

    No you're okay.

I don't think I've ever gone into a cinema, seen a person sitting alone, and said to myself 'god, what a loner! FREAK!'

It's perfectly acceptable to go alone, and I have a me-date this week to do just that!

I've never gone to the cinema alone. It'd be kind of like going to a restaurant on my own, I just wouldn't do it. I don't find it odd anyone else does it, just not for me.

For me going to the cinema is a social event as I like the chat/dinner/drink with friends before or after. It's not just about the movie for me.

Given that the cinema is one of the few places you go NOT to talk and interact with others I've never understood why people think it's weird to go alone. If you wanna go see something, go see it

I get why people think it is, because growing up you would always go in a group to the cinema, and so you might be self-concious about going to the cinema on your own. No need to be though, nothing weird about it at all.

I've never done it but I don't see why it should be considered weird at all. I've gone to a lot of concerts by myself though.

Tbh, I feel sorry for people who are vain enough to worry about going to the cinema alone. Its a cinema...you go to watch a movie. Hopefully you are not going to be talking through it anyway.

Very well put. I dont have the balls to go. But I would love to go alone.

It's one of my favourite things to do.

You get to choose the movie you want to watch, compromising with my Mrs in the past has had me endure the most dreadful ROM coms.

Switch off for a few hours, nothing like it.

It's sad that you think it requires balls to go somewhere on your own

What next? Is it weird to go to bed on your own?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,822 ✭✭✭Mickey H

    I wouldn't consider it weird.

Well as Earthhorse said, people might view the cinema as a social activity because of associating it with going with a group of friends all the time as kids, and with a partner/date later on. It's a case of what people are used to.

It's only weird if you put your own arm around yourself while pretending to yawn and proceed to shift your own face.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭Nino Brown

I do it all the time, but I know a lot of people who wouldn't. I think its weird to not go see a movie you want to see, just because nobody else wants to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,670 ✭✭✭Riddle101

I do it all the time. Nothing weird about it though. Some people have different tastes in movies so it's hard to make a choice or go with others for the sake of it. For instance, I went to see The Hobbit there two weeks ago. My friends aren't in to those sort of movies, so naturally I would go myself to watch it.

If it's weird to watch television on your own then it's weird to go to the cinema on your own.
