Ive been working along side this person for several weeks now, from the first day on the job ive noticed a horrible smell. At first i wasnt too bothered by it but as time went on it became more & more irratating. Its a weird smell, its nothing to do with personal hygiene. To describe it i would say its a mix of cigarettes, fart & horrible fragrance. Ive been very tolerate up until now but recently ive been getting fart headaches, the non scientific description for a fart headache is when a person farts & it lingers so long that it gives you a migraine. That was the last straw for me, im busy & the last thing i need is to be suffering for a fart headache.

One day after lunch it got so bad that i resorted to immature measures, i had to by my jumper over my nose, a grow man sitting in an office with a jumper over his nose. I taught to myself right thats it something needs to be said here. Im not sitting here anymore with this going on. I tend to speak without consulting with my brain first, so I turned to the person & said "i cant take this anymore, you smell like a piece of sh*t crawled out your arse & its having a smoke before heading out on a Saturday night, its disgusting & you need to sort it out". On reflection, i should have went to HR, but even at that how do you explain to a HR rep that someone smells like sh*t. They werent happy with my outburst & i was told in no incertain terms to f*ck off, they proceeded to abuse me & i was called & accused of some awful things.

Anyway im amazed it hasnt been reported to HR, 2 or 3 people witnessed it too so i was expecting something,i returned to Ireland for Christmas & heard nothing more about, i was expecting a call to say dont come back. Im now due back in New York & im dreading facing this person and also if they havent sorted the smell out, what do i do? I cant tolerate another dose of fart headaches & i dont think its even a recognised medical condition, its not like you can go into your local drug store & ask the chemist for fart headache medication

    What you do ?

We had a BO issue with a colleague in work who was absolutely rank...

At Christmas I bought him a shower gel/deodarant gift set & told him I wrote out instructions on how to use it in case he didn't know how...

    Problem solved :D

how about you stop thinking you're amazing and calm down when you approach people in future, who could have anything going on in their lives.

plus, New york STINKS anyway, so it could be coming in off the street

You need to fight fire with fire.
Have a spicy indian for dinner in the evening washed down by a few pints of guniness, go to the gym before work but don't shower or use deodorant afterwards, then have a big cigar.

Where I work there is a SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) regarding Personal Hygiene.
You should def bring to HR's attention.

I think the OP did the right thing.

Yes - it's rude. It goes against normal social niceties - but so does smelling like a fart all day. When you are dealing with rude people, you generally need to be rude. When you are dealing with inconsiderate people, you generally need to be inconsiderate.

If you wanted to communicate with an Englishman, you'd speak English. That's what they understand. If you wanted to communicate to a Frenchman, you'd speak French.

In our culture there are lots of things we don't speak of in polite conversation. There is no polite way to address it. You can't 'nicely' tell someone they smell - even if they do.

What generally happens is everyone knows the guy stinks and everyone goes out of their way to avoid the stinky guy. People were probably fighting over desks to avoid the stinky guy and that's why they gave it to the poor Irish guy! (Damn Americans).

But it's awkward. HR doesn't want to deal with it because it's really awkward. The boss doesn't want to deal with it because it's really awkward. So, everyone is happy enough to ignore it, while making sure they don't have to deal with it....and they just expect the people around the guy to suffer in silence. Because, they, they don't have to deal with it.
