Picked up 8ltrs in Tralee today, hadnt seen this thread so thought €10 for 4ltr was a bargain. Darn I've been overcharged.

I wouldn't be changing my own oil if the car is still under warranty is what I meant. It's an easy out for the manufacturer if there is a claim.

    Ok.
However, there's no problem with changing your own oil provided you use the correct spec, whatever the brand.
Using the correct oil will ensure the car is covered by the manufacturers warranty. If any engine damage is caused by using the incorrect oil some clever guys in white coats will be able to determine this quite easily, thus voiding any warranty.

Make no mistake if you have a serious problem under warranty the manufacturer will be looking very closely at your service history. As for out of warranty goodwill forget it. By all means change your own oil outside of warranty but doing so under warranty is a false economy and poor advice IMO.

You don't get the euro off for reserving online anymore, or at least I didn't this morning.

The place my mother gets the car services use 10w40. They reckon that is to be used on that car. They use to be an Opel main dealer
I have rang a few Opel dealers and they say it is the 5w30.

Maybe thats why they used to be an Opel dealer ;)

seriously though, i doubt it would make a whole lot of difference in ireland (afaik the 10w is rated for -20) but if it was me i'd go with the majority consensus. 5w30/40.

The car has started burning oil this last year (1L every 2 months).

If its the 1.4 VVTI engine dont use 10/40 on it as thats the reason its going through so much oil, most mechanics will put 10/40 in.

I had a 01 and loads of them were recalled to get the bottom block replaced, to solve mine I checked the manual and it specifically stated 5/30 semi synth as the oil to use. I done an oil change with 5/30 and it is still going strong years later with no oil been eaten away :)

Anyone know if there would be any problem using the 5w/30 Ford fully synthetic (says 2006 onwards on it) in a pre-2006 Ford?

    Thanks

No problems. It's more saying that it meets the correct specs that it can be used in 2006 onwards fords, not to exclusively be used in them.

Oil spec is: Ford WSS M2C-913-C

Fully backwards compatible and is strongly recommended for all applications that currently require the specification Ford M2C913-B. The new engine oil provides various benefits to the customer such as improved fuel economy benefits and high robustness to biodiesel fuels.

If I have the pre-2006 part-synthetic currently in my car is is still ok to top up with this one?

    Thanks
