guitar backing tracks

Hoping someone can help me - my OH plays guitar and the other night in the pub we were watching a guy playing and he had a background "thing" that played piano & other background instruments. He'd like one and his birthday is coming up - but I have no idea what I need to look for or what they are called.
It would only be for home use so don't need anything too fancy - anyone figure out what I need :rolleyes:

there are a number of ways of doing it.

you can buy the tracks as MP3s.

there are MIDI players that operate out of a laptop and you can tinker with the levels and instruments

or there are stand alone MIDI backing track machines.

Thanks for the reply. I think he wants a stand alone backing track machine - now I have a name for it I can ask in the local music store.
Would it be the kind of thing that I'd find in those cash converter type stores, seen lots of music stuff in some of them.

Go on to karaoke version on the internet you can download the track as mp3s you can adjust the volume of instruments or take the guitar bass out real easy then download on to an iPod all you then needs is a small amp to play the iPod through much easier & you would pick an amp up for 50 or 60 euro
