    Tue 3,000m swim

I'm really busy at work, got some tummy bug, 3 college assessments due shortly, and there's a whole lot of grown-up life stuff to deal with at the moment; but a grabbed swim 1km became 2k became 3km, nice and steady and mind-cleansing, sometimes the pool swim can be a godsend.

Whoo-hoo! Result from my exam on Number theory and mathematical logic just came in (this is the one about the mathematician Kurt Godel's work), I got 94% in the exam, so a distinction overall for the module. It was the hardest thing I've ever worked for, I'm delighted to get that result. Roll on the Tri season!:D

Well done on that. Seeing as you're a mathematical genius you don't fancy giving a maths pleb like me some grinds in probability modelling using Excel do you? I'll pay you in beer and skittles :)

Only joking.............unless I fail the module after which I might be serious. I've a half decent knowledge of stats from a PhD a lifetime ago, but probability is beyond me at the minute. Old dog and new tricks and all that.

Wed 40 mins turbo, 6k run

Not a bric, just squeezing in what I could. Missed tonights Pilates, that couldn't be helped. Easy enough on the turbo, then dinner, then 6km slowly managing a sensitive achilles around the backroads of Carnew.

You missed a tough one. The exercises move on a level each week (I think our instructor likes inflicting pain on us). Really felt it but feel good afterwards.

I'll take a snap at the Movember race I'm organizing, 24th Nov. May as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

    Wed 2,500m swim

    2km steady, 500m drills.

I haven't been posting or training much due to some personal circumstances, but I may as well continue to log any training. This place can be good for keeping you honest if nothing else, and if I don't log I skip training.

Steady swim, first in a week. The water felt like I've been away from it. My achilles is still sore, so I've given up on the idea that its an injury I can just run through, and I won't run for the next few weeks until it feels 100%. Turbos and swims will do, when I can fit them in.

Reminder: for anyone free next Sunday- some of us from Tinahely Tri club will be holding a small hill race on Mangans Loop, 11am registration, sambo's and refreshments after at O'Connors pub, all proceeds go to Irish Cancer Society for Movember. Suggested donation to enter is €5, which you can "enter" online via this link, or pay on the day. Or just turn up and run for free if you prefer, the hills are one of the last things free in life, long may they continue to be so. Should have a good few at it, all abilities welcome :)

Well I've not trained for a while, real life is getting in the way. On top of which, my calf/achilles has taken its time getting better. My job workload has literally quadrupled, real life has become very immediate and real, and college stuff has to be done on top of that. So I've been tucking into fine wines and beers the past month, to relieve stress. This has left me with a nice gut, and zero fitness, so something has to give.

Time to get back training- I hit the pool today and had no form at all. That'll hopefully come back starting in January. I met our new coach yesterday (interested can't make the only time slot we have; thank's for all your help last year mate), and he seems to really know his stuff. It'll be different, but hopefully we'll make good progress again. Tried to jog tonight for the first time in a month, and so far so good. It was good to be moving again.

Continuing with the "soft lad" approach, tonights spin was an easy one in from of the first half of Cloud Atlas, which gets better still with each viewing.

My achilles isn't quite as pain-free after last nights trot as I'd like it to be. Maybe I'll switch to running on flat grass for a while.

I'll be down in Cavan Saturday, sorry Mick. Would have leapt at the chance. I remember that Winter solstice run we did a few years back up to Annagh hill. Magic, watching the dawn break! Enjoy :)

Had to drop my car to the garage, so I took the opportunity to get a run back. Achilles felt a little stiff at first- I'm overprotective of it- but soon I was motoring away. It felt good to be running again, along a wintery Railway Walk. Snow dusting was evident on Annagh in the distance...fingers crossed!

You seem to have that achilles issue now for weeks? Specifically what area is it affecting you?

I'm struggling with same injury also for the past 5 weeks. Barely avg 40 mile / weeks. Because I'm protective of it bloody knee is sore also.

Yeah, sore knee, sore calf, sore achilles... its all connected I'm sure. I hurt my calf running 8 weeks back, hasn't been great since. Doesn't affect me on the bike or in the pool, and light jogging seems ok now.

With the pool closing for Xmas week, I had it in mind to throw in a 400tt just to update the table, but working on my short form would be more beneficial. After a steady 500m warm up, in which I felt good, the first set was started. These felt good, most came in 1:35, I had to slow a bit in case it would affect the rest of the session. Next set was done at a more controlled pace, form was decent. The last set was about holding pace, perfectly steady throughout. I'm happy with this session: with swim lessons starting agin soon, I have a decent residual base to work from.

I reckon its a safe bet that your soleus muscle is in full spasm, gives off a feeling off a sore achilles. Had the same about 2 weeks ago but was able to self massage it out. Another 2 i have been coaching had similar, thought it was achilles when in fact it was the soleus which needed to be released.
    Should be easily fixable.

A handy short run today, old school in the forest. The calf and heel felt stronger than they have in ages. I'm content with how this week went, first time back training in a while. Next week will hopefully be something similar, and then start to slowly ramp it up through January.

That sounds like a good diagnosis Fran, cheers. I googled a few stretches and massages, and lo and behold that area is very tight all right.

    Xmas day 25th Dec 4km run 20:16

I had been ordered to take the brother-in-law out from under my missus' and MIL's feet, so we drove to Tullow for a Goal Xmas mile. Typically, it was advertised for the 25th, but is actually on the 26th, so no mile time to be had. Just as well, I'm a chesty cough so would have posted an embaressing time.;)

Instead we headed to the frosty Tomnafinnogue trails where I got to try out good old Santa's gift- a new 910XT:D. Pretty impressed with it so far, the buzzer and beep will be most useful in pacing OW swims. Easy enough jog today, but nice to get out on Xmas day.

My daughter was delighted with her hurdles by the way! The backstory is she was leading in her Community Games 100m hurdles race last summer, but fell at the last hurdle. Obviously she has been thinking about revenge ever since, so will be practicing for the next 6 months to get her gold. I love to see that determination in a 9-year-old!

    26 Dec 13k run

The tri club organised a super-serious Stephen's day run from Kilaveney Church, to the Dying Cow pub. I like the fact this run is all downhill both spiritually and geographically, so eagerly turned up at 11am to meet 30+ runners in various states of hungovererdness. It was a perfect morning for a jaunt and chat, 13k done at a mainly steady 5min/km. The final hill up to the Dying Cow is a nightmare, but its a great feeling to have worked hard and earned those (many) pints. Well done to us, heroes all:)

    Sat 1,100m swim

I was working yesterday, so no training, and busy studying all day today, so this was just a quick swim grabbed before the pool closed. I was tired, feel a bit chesty, also post-Xmas excess to contend with... all in all this wasn't a great swim time-wise, but it gave me the chance to wear the new Garmin which seems to work as well as the Garmin Swim in the pool, so I'm happy with that.

I went straight into a warm-up which was all over the place, so it morphed into a 400m in 7:15. My arms, legs, and lungs all felt like it was too much effort, but I wanted to post a Dec 400mTT just for reference. So I guilted myself into trying a faster one straight after, this time the 400m TT in 7:02. Pretty lousy time, but I'll take it as I'm not feeling 100%. But there's no doubt about it, I have a huge distance to go before I'm swimming like I was last year. Lessons start up in early January, can't wait for the fresh slate that a New Year brings.

    Wed 1st Jan 2014 70 mins turbo

Nothing done over the past few days as I put my back out badly when erecting a basketball hoop... today is the first day I've been able to stand upright, and so I got in a moderate effort turbo spin, while watching the second half of "Cloud Atlas". Again.

Looking back on the last year, it was a tale of two half's. I started the year well, before an increased workload and college stuff demanded less training. In reality, that's a poor excuse, and one I'm resolving to fix for 2014. Goals are to lose weight so bike and run times become less shameful, to get 550 NS points (495 last year), and to give the Tri season my best shot by training consistantly and with greater volume. Swimming will be my biggest discipline again. Faster, punchier stuff suits me better, so Sprints will be the main focus, and I'll look to be in top shape for Hook or by Crook. My Maths degree finishes in June (after 5 long years), but if I relieve study stress with a run instead of a bottle, everything should complement the other.

Gotta love these New Years Day fresh intentions!:)
