What's the matter?

I am looking at a picture of a chap called Leo Cullen in the paper. He has bandages wrapped around his lower thighs, just above his knees..
Well as a confirmed couch potato, (please don't laugh at my question), why is he bandaged, what is he's strapping up?
They are too high to stop his knee caps falling off and I thought the big thigh muscles were higher up the legs!

Strapping for lifting him in the line out. Not injury related.

He is a second row player, so generally he will be one of the players who jumps in the lineout.

They tape "sausages" (obviously not actual sausages) to their thighs so that the players lifting them can get a grip. :)

Ah, I see, for others to get traction. Thanks for the explanation. It's a bad photo, he looks old, maybe he's worn out after the game.

Alas, Leo has looked like that since he was playing for the Irish U21 side. Here he is at 20 years old...

Oh dear, I googled him. He's not old at all. He'll be 36 in a few days.
