I'd definitely consider 2nd hand too. Not sure I'd go as far back as 1940 for what I presume will be a daily watch, but I'm sure Wibbs will be able to advise you better on that.

For 5K you're in a great position to get a really nice dress watch AND a really nice less formal day-to-day watch.

Have you considered vintage? Tend to be small size in general except for military issued stuff as below, all around the 40-42mm in size.
Longines made for the Czech airforce from circa 1938-47
That's a pricey one though as you can usually have one for around the 2 grand mark.
Pre TAG Heuer made for the German airforce in the 60's-70's
Dodane for the French airforce 1950's-70's
Pre Moon Omega Speedmaster. The "real deal" as it were
If I had the money? I'd go for this;
Leonidas made for the Italian airforce in the 60's
Heuer bought the company and basically rebadged it later on and produced the Heuer Bund I linked above. The thing is the Leonidas is significantly rarer and at the moment is often cheaper, but this will change I'll bet the farm on that.
Advantages of vintage:
Better value. You'll have some chunk of change left to spend on beer and such.
No depreciation unlike a new watch. In fact they will get more valuable with time. EG I got a Heuer Bund three years ago for 1600. Today? 2500+ This goes double for military stuff. In the case of the Leonidas I linked I'll lay another bet and say by 2015-18 that price will have doubled if not more. I'm kicking myself I didn't have the money to buy one when I could. If I had the money today I'd buy one. Some watches I bought in the 90's have gone up well over 400%. One watch I bought in the early 90's I sold in 06 and bought a car from the proceeds(that cost just over 5 figures).
Real history, real "authenticity" not advertising execs claiming history in flashy ads. Again this goes double for the military stuff. That Leonidas and the Dodane would have been actually worn by a jet fighter or mil helicopter jockey(the Heuers also had ground based applications).
More purposeful. Designed for a real need. No flim flam.
The Cool Factor. Yep I'm shallow.
Disadvantages?
Not waterproof(unless you buy and overhaul a vintage divers watch), so no swimming wearing one. So long as you don't do that or wear one in the shower you'll be OK.
Not brand new, no shiny box and brochure.
No warranty.
Getting a watchmaker to service one can be a trial, but they do exist. There's a bloke in Scotland that is the very definition of reasonable and brilliant at his work.
Parts can sometimes be an issue, but for the ones listed above, unless you lose/break outside stuff like pushers/buttons and crowns the parts are there as most use, or have components common to, common movements at the time that were produced for quite a while in large numbers. Just may take some research. Indeed I've gotten brand new in box parts for old stuff for less than a tenner on ebay, when the same part for a brand new watch could cost 4 times that.

In my experience, I've found the only thing with the really vintage stuff you have to avoid is getting them wet. That's the biggie. Otherwise I have found them scarily robust. I've had spills and accidents(translation: Wibbs is a clumsy old bastid) that would have many watches sporting springs through the dial and the vintage kept on ticking.
Plus I forgot to say they're not automatics for the most part, so you have to handwind them on a daily basis. Me I love that personal connection to a watch, but for many these days used to quartz or autos this may be a chore(and I can well understand that).
All I can say is that I wish I had Cuddled's dilemma. I'd be hopping up and down. 5K to spend. Oh My God. I'd be ringing the cardiac ward in advance. Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I really like the Planet Ocean, and was trying hard to buy one a couple of months ago - but owners are understandably slow to sell up.
But it seems to be the opposite of what the OP is looking for, even in 42mm non-chrono form. The SMP is probably a little closer, as it's a bit smaller - but it's still not really an "elegant" watch.
I think the Aqua Terra might be better suited:

May not be to your taste, but if you can wait a while for the watch, I would definitely look at a Dornblüth or a Jorg Schauer which are both beautiful handmade watches within your price range. (Don't worry we can offer plenty of advice on what to get to tide you over).
If you need an icon more immediately, why not chose an iconic movement...... the Zenith El Primero, available in lots of guises at the moment, but my favorite in your price range is the Pilot Big Date Special
