P90s V Humbuckers

Howdee all,

Gonna hopefully try out some SGs soon, totally undecided between a P90 and a humbucker SG.

On video evidence alone, both sound brilliant, but I'm aware I already have a Jazzmaster, and will have a tele with lace sensor pickups soon (single coil and humbucker), so a sonically different guitar would be good. That's what's turning me off a P90 guitar, but any demos I heard , it just sounds so sweeeeeet.

P-90s are great but be warned of the hum !
I've a Billie Joe junior I love playing but the hum drives me scatty
With a humbucker equipped guitar you have the option to put in humbucker sized p-90s

P-90s are the mutts nuts.

Probably worth bearing in mind that Jazzmaster pickups and P90's are pretty different despite their appearances. JM pickups being a bit more mellow with less mids.

What pots do the P90's need? 250k or 500k?

On the pup side of things it really depends on what you're looking for.
For soemthing that's a bit too bright I'd pop in a 250k, too muddy use a 1M and anything in the middle I stick to 500k.
Pots are cheap and very simple to swap in and out so you could always run through a few values and see what you like the sound of.

It's very much dependant on your pups, guitar and setup.

I use 500k linear for volume & 250 k log for tone
but it depends on how bright the pickup is
A good paper in oil cap makes the tone pot very useful
I use 33nf k40y's for my 2 les pauls

I took the emg's out of an ltd ec1000 and put in one gibson p90 in the bridge. Tone and volume knobs get turned if i need a 'neck' sound. Have to say i really like it, basically copied phil x except with the ec and not a viper! It went from a metal axe to an all around guitar that has great cleans and can still handle the heavy stuff. I'd highly recommend the gibson humbucker size p90s.

I had an ESP viper a few yrs back and took out the emgs and put a humbucker sized p90 in the neck and a passive humbucker in the bridge. Dunno why i sold it. It was a b***ard to keep in tune.

You could do worse than to check out the G&L Fallout, either USA or Tribute models. Nice offset design, humbucker in the bridge with a P90 in the neck, good hardware, quite cheap.
