Everyone who goes to these is willing to believe, which is the only reason they fall for the vagueness of it.
Go as a skeptic, and analyse everything that's said and you'll realise how much bullshít is actually spouted.

A lot of what they say is indeed accurate, because it's the most generalised and obvious stuff ever. There's nothing special to it.

Did she have a conversation with some alleged "fellow customer" while in the waiting room telling them all this?

How can you see into the future if it hasn't happened yet?

Nobody, in the history of the world, has been able to demonstrate any sort of psychic abilities, including fortune tellers. It can't be done.

A friend of ours went to one.
He was amazing she said, 'he said I'd had an accident when I was younger which could have nearly killed me'.
I pointed out to her that that's pretty much true of every person on the planet.

Fortune tellers should probably be banned, but, on the other hand it's only the criminally stupid who believe in this kind of thing, and if fortune teller weren't around I'm sure they'd find something else equally dumbass to waste their money on.

there are a few frauds out there, but mostly these fortune tellers are in touch with a spirit guide that helps them see your future, if I were you I'd start looking at sites and engagement rings.

Are your sure your girlfriend isn't just dropping very big hints and says the fortune teller made her do it? ;)

You're a bit naive. I bet if you look at most married couples, they have built a house and have 2-3 kids.

Now if she said that in 1.5 years, you would move to Oz, start working for a mining company, quit after 2 years due to unsocial hours, move back to Ireland, and spend another year or 2 on the dole, would you have believed her as quick?

Out of interest, how much did your girlfriend pay for this?

Of course people have had similar experiences. Lots of credulous people happy to hear a general statement as being specific to them.

Open any newspaper and read any horoscope. Read any description of any star sign. They all apply to you.

Also - if you could predict the future, even just marginally above random selection; you'd be rich.

Will the Euro rise in value tomorrow? Yes or No?

If you could accurately answer the question, using your psychic abilities - even just 60% of the time, you'd be a millionaire. Entire industries hinge about making informed predictions about the future, as accurately as possible.

PhD level researches spend decades analyzing anything than can help predict what will happen. Entire companies are built around it. People devote their life to it.

Militaries and governments too - have invested lots and lots of money studying paranormal abilities....and they all come up with nothing too.

There are standing offers too - any of these fortune tellers on the street could write a letter, agree to a test, demonstrate their ability and get a million dollar check. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Randi_Educational_Foundation

It's entertainment, treat it as such.

Assuming you meant psychics.... you are right. The use them. But that doesn't mean they work. Police aren't immune from all the same problems regular people have. Actual studies show that police psychics....aren't.

A number of scientific tests have been conducted on psychics detectives, using control groups, to try to establish any psychic ability relating to crime solving. One of the earliest was carried out by Dutch Police officer, Fillipus Brink in 1960. He conducted a one year long study of psychics and their abilities, but found no evidence of any abilities. .[4] Another study was conducted in 1982 where evidence from four crimes was given to three groups; psychic detectives, students and police detectives. The clues related to four crimes, two crimes that had been solved, and two that had not been. The study found no difference between the three groups in ability to indicate what crimes had been committed be looking at the evidence.[5] Some flaws in the scientific method were apparent in these two tests. A further test was conducted in 1997, this test focusing on improving on the scientific methods used in the previous tests. This study used two groups, one consisting of three students from the University of Hertfordhire, the other group consisting of three psychics (two Psychic Detectives, and another Psychic who had a media profile and had been endorsed by police due to his abilities). The two groups were shown three objects associated with three serious crimes. They then advocated theories, but once again, no difference was found in terms of the accuracy between the two groups.[6]

It is a mixture of high probability guesses (the stuff that is general enough to apply to anyone) and cold reading (phrasing things so the target reveals some information that you then feed back to them). Then just making up some nonsense about the future when you have your target believing you. Sometimes they also do a little research beforehand if the opportunity presents itself. I think it was Derren Brown who had a show where he invited psychics to visit a factory about which he had made up a fake history and posted it online as well as putting physical clues in the factory, in order to do psychic readings. All of them just fed the stuff he made up back to him, a couple admitted they had looked it up online in advance.

I saw a fortune teller the other day. She told me I would come into some money.

Last night I shagged a girl called Penny - spooky or what?

Haha i wouldn't mind if you started a thread stating the fortune teller told her something absolutely crazy specific, and do we think it's real.(i would still say no)....But to say she said we'll get married, like how absolutely vague and ridiculous!

It hasn't happened yet, you are the one who will be deciding that fate!
