How to send free text messages?

Hi, Im on O2 and thinking of getting a Windows phone. Use Cabbage quite a bit and as far as I can see theres no alternative on Windows phones? Any suggestions? Thanks, Cli

skype is pretty widely accepted across platforms.

Surely in this day and age the actual number of SMS messages sent/received is quite low? I average about 20/month, if you included iMessage it would be well into a thousand but this isn't trackable by the carrier, its sent over data.
