I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the only way to extend a network with Apple gear is to disable the wireless on your router, hook up an AirPort Extreme and extend with an Extreme or an Express.

Yep, I've tried it a few times with different routers and a single Airport device, and no config has ever worked - always ended up with a bridged router and two Airport devices, or with disabled wi-fi on the router and two bridged Airport devices.

Apple refurb store is your best bet.

You can extend with an Airport device as long as the router in question supports WDS
