Headphones stopped working in Windows 8.1

I was using my Acer laptop with headphones this morning without any problems. About an hour later, I went to use it again but there was no sound from the headphones. It works fine using the laptop's speakers. I didnt change any settings between these times.

I know it is not a hardware problem as I also have windows 7 installed and the headphones work correctly with that. I have tried to update my audio drivers but it tells me they are up to date.

    Any help would be appreciated

Install the drivers manually, download them from manufacturers website. The drivers that windows installs automatically don't work sometimes, despite their certification and testing process.

Thanks, yeah I just installed the Realtek drivers instead of the Microsoft ones and it's fine now.
