    Exactly: a fake SUV.

A car that looks a bit like an SUV, but doesn't have the excuse that it is designed for off-road use. So it is top-heavy and handles worse than a same sized hatch or estate because...

Range Rovers are cool? Something like that.

such anger..where is it coming from?...don't buy one and you'll be grand

I was in Spain last week and spotted numerous Dacia Dusters.

They did not look out of place parked alongside Nissan Qashquai, Nissan Juke, Toyota Rav4 , Kia SUV and Hyundai i35, in golf club car parks.

They seem quite popular in self drive fleets, and indeed seemed quite capable of transporting a couple of golfers and all their gear.

I don't think Dacia ever set out to compete in the Range Rover market, but they are certainly holding their own in the entry level SUV market.

As for a new car having minor problems fixed under warranty, it would not be too different to Renault ,VW, or indeed any other manufacturer with a new model.

    Of course time will tell...........

Do those cars advertise themselves as SUVs? I thought they defined themselves as Crossovers.

As for the Duster, for me the NCAP rating would be the biggest issue and for that reason I could never buy one.

If I needed a car with a 'bit of power' I wouldn't buy a Duster or any car under 150 bhp at the very minimum. If I wanted a car with great handling I wouldn't be buying a Duster or any Crossover for that matter.

However, if power and handling didn't matter and the Duster NCAP rating was higher then, if it suited my purposes, I'd have one.

Fair point, but the NCAP rating keeps cropping up.
As discussed earlier in this thread, the NCAP rating is due to the Duster not having ESP and other computerised doo-dah's, but it seems to crash just fine compared to other cars.
Some people have stated that a car without ESP is a death trap, going a bit far IMO and another point would be, does an average FWD >100bhp econo-box REALLY need traction control, launch control, ESP and other fully computerised stability programs? Most will never go beyond 90 km/h.
My current CMax just about has ABS and I could live without it, you just have to know how to drive.
In fact, the current trend of deliberately not training drivers for emergencies and an over-reliance on gadgets means that any "new" driver who drives an old car without all that flim-flam will inevitably steer into a crash, because he is used to stomp on the brakes, yank the steering wheel over, close his eyes and hope for the best.
IMO any new driver should have to learn in a MKII Escort with skinny tires, 200 bhp and no gizmos whatsoever. On a gravel track. In the wet. And dark.
No wonder we're seeing more and more "American driving" here, where everything is OK as long as it's straight on and nothing unexpected happens.

I'm not angry, as r3nu4l says, I am sneering.

These cars are stupid, and I will point and laugh if I want.

Fair comment. You are entitled to your opinion too.

What car do you drive yourself? Would you recommend buying one & why?:)

We have a Mini and an S-Max, I highly recommend both, but neither one is a sensible substitute for someone looking at a Duster.

Two very nice cars indeed. Duster is absolutely not in the same league.

However for some people on a limited budget to buy a new car the Duster is not a bad option.:)

    I would disagree.

For someone on a limited budget who has to buy a new car that looks a bit like an SUV, OK, but nobody really has to. Buying a second hand car that looks like a car would be a better plan.

    Yeti
(And I would consider a Duster)

I wanted a roomy A to B machine with a decent boot for prams etc and with a 3 year warranty and the Duster ticks those boxes for a fantastic price. A second hand car will not provide the warranty. I've went down the second hand route and it wasn't for me. I got rid of a bmw 5 series for the Duster as it was costing too much to run. I would personally never buy a Mini like you have but wouldn't go on a forum and rant about it. Each to their own.

I already said if it has to be new, cheap and look like an SUV then the Duster is your only man.

But I'd rather have €16K worth of second-hand car with an interior and some pace and handling.

And a second-hand Kia will have plenty of warranty.

I've done 42377km in my Duster. It's had it's second service at about 40000km. Absolutely no problems or issues to report. No sign of rust. It's driving today as it did the day it was picked up. It's very capable on road and off road - no problem towing full 8X4 trailer loads of turf off a bog. Cheap to tax. Cheap to insure. Good MPG. NCAP rating of 3 stars isn't the end of the world. As an everyday A to B vehicle they're excellent value and very economical to run! Far better value than a €16K worth of second-hand car in my opinion.

People go on about the NCAP ratings and then recommend a second hand car. The older car probably has the same rating if tested on the latest NCAP ratings that the Duster scored on. Delighted to hear yours is issue free

A Dacia, maybe - I had a Sandero as a hire car on holiday a while back, and as an even-cheaper-Clio, it wasn't so bad.

An SUV, no. A 2 wheel drive car pretending to be an SUV: hell, no.

I have one 2 wd it's a grand driving experience have it 3 months but the heater cable got stuck and the whole engine block had to be removed to replace the cable , which had to come from Belgium or some where ! Not happy new car engine dismantled after such a short time !! Anyway that was three weeks ago now it's gone again ! Be aware

I was/am really hoping that Dacia would be able to shake up the market a bit and I would definitely consider buying a Duster if they could deliver a reliable product for a very good price.

I will be very disappointed if the rust and parts issues are not sorted and are part of a general trend!

I really want them to succeed so they need to cop on!

Didn't know Auto was much of a popular option here outside the Granny/American tourist rental market?

2012paddy2012 - please can you tell me why the engine had to be taken out to replace a heater cable? Perhaps the dashboard had to be taken out, but not the engine surely ! Interested to know more, please do tell....

They've just announced plans to make the new Clio dCi and Captur in Auto diesels, with the super-smooth EDC gearbox, nothing on the horizon yet with Dacia mind you.

Oui it is, Efficient Dual Clutch. Basically a manual 6 speed with an electronic clutch. All covered by 5 Year/Unlimited mileage Warranty (in most cases where applicable, T&C's apply)
