Well when you're going at a snail's pace on the hard shoulder with a bust tyre you're sure to get high mpg...even in an Alfa :P

In fairness he should be getting infinity mpg... with the maf sensor issue his car has!

Just reading about about your motoring trials, I now have an image in my head of a skinny bird in a power suit jumping up and down on a wheel brace and swearing like a fishwife:D

Quick question. What grade oil does a BMW 520i 2004 take ? Also how many litres of oil do they take roughly ?

I think it's 5w30 same as the diesels man. Except you need to meet ll01 and not ll04 requirements. Don't know capacity but it should be ~4.5L

Right apart from the power suit :) You forgot to add in the few odd kicks the wheel got :)

And also... a handy tip, don't put LL01 into a diesel. I learned that the hard way, my emissions (well - those of the car anyway) are up.
And I have the NCT on saturday. Well, a good old Italian tuneup should hopefully fix that, then I will change the oil out for some LL04

Oh be careful man, our machines are really contrary on getting that ll04 :(

Unless you walk away, and then run back to kick it again it doesnt count:D

I remember trying to change a puncture in my dads old urvan, course he had forgotten to mention that 1 side had right hand threads and the other left hand:D

I would have been gobsmacked by €156 too! No Axa discount either...

Edit: Just had a look on www.eiretyres.com Bridgestones in that size range from €80 to €193!

Can't find the tyre I have (Potenza S-03) on eiretyres, but the Potenza S-02 is €86 delivered so imagine it would be close to that. Including fitting it would be close to €100 so I'm pleased enough with what I paid.

I hope the petrols aren't as fussy. As this BMW is a friends and he just through a load of 5w40 into it. But that's not even the biggest issue it's burning about 2 litres of oil a week and even though I warned him to get it checked a few weeks ago he let oil go so low the dreaded low oil pressure light came on which went off when he put more oil in it. What can you do some people just no too little about cars for there own good. I wouldn't mind but when he first told me he had a 520 I assumed it was a mid 90s rough one that was worth a few hundredh euro. But this one has a fbsh from new. Hopefully he will get it sorted but the damage is probably already done.

If she's burning that much oil I think he can put what he wants in it
Can't understand why people treat their cars so bad either!
Bmw's are shocking picky about their oil.

I suppose the oil grade won't make any difference at this stage. I'd say this car was fairly well minded it's serviced in a BMW main dealer every 6 months and was owned by the his parents from one year old before they gave it too him. The biggest problem is when people don't have a clue about car mechanics when the sh!t hits the fan they don't have a clue what to do and often make the situation worse by continuing to drive and also there lack of knowledge often means they miss the warning signs.

I'm not saying everyone should know car mechanics inside out but they should have some knowledge and at least know what the car warning lights mean. It should really be thought in secondary school. But then I suppose when people don't have the interest they don't want to know I know that from my mother and brother who don't have a clue about cars and couldn't care less how they work.

Have seen a few of the new model octavias around town the last couple of days, look quite nice irl and the high specced ones look even better. Never thought Id say that as I really dislike the appearance of all octavias previous

Had to rescue the mother after the clutch cable went on her car, meaning I had to drive it home and she had to drive mine...

I never realised how comical it must be for other users to be stuck behind that thing, the sound and lowness is quite obnoxious :pac::pac::pac:

I specifically told her to take it handy as the most powerful car she drove before that was a 1.2.... In hindsight though :pac:

That's for one wheel and excluding vat and delivery. Try ffoc or focusowners parts for sale if looking for wheels.
