W126 - very very nice, never been in one - but if the W124s ive been in are any indication - a good W126 must be something lovely to ride in :D.

On Pandas - when you say coolant - is that the Head gasket issue you get on Puntos.

Thought a 1.1 might have ducked that issue - but I won't let it put me off - all cars have their issues.

They do seem reliable generally from what I see - will have to think about it.

Theres a perfectly adequate car in the yard here I can use - but its not mine - and its boring (2.0 Corolla diesel - non turbo :D).

The 280 is sweet to go and is very smooth, the 500 was something else :D

Yes, the same issue. Mind you I don't hear near as many stories of hg failures on Pandas but still no harm to keep on top of the coolant system, prevention better than cure etc

They are not everyones cup of tea these vectras

But if this actually is a 1.8 (I thought the 1.8s were an elegance or some higher spec) then if it all checks out it could be an okay family car.

I don't think they are a bad car - and if it all checks out and is got at the right money - it could be okay.

I've drove a couple of Vectra B's (previous model) in my day. At best they were strictly average. Relatively comfortable and economical if you were to pitch them against comparable cars. They are far far from the most durable car out there.

It had being remarked to me a few times that them vectra c's weren't quite as good as the vectra b in terms of reliability anyway so don't think that would leave them in a very good place if thats the case.

Still though as an all rounder and in particular paying heed to the asking price on that one I reckon you could do worse for your money. Get it for a grand and you'd be away in a hack. If checking it over I'd pay particular heed to the coolant bottle, any oily sludge in that and I'd be on me bike. Also make sure there is a constant stream of hot air coming from the heater and the temp needle doesn't bounce all over the shop.

The 1.8's in that vintage were pretty bad on petrol. I was only getting 25mpg around town in mine. They brought out a much better vvt version in 04 I think. Aprt from that they are a well built fairly reliable car. I had 3 of them

Cause the VRT calculator says its over 800e to clear

Fresh NCT meaning until August '15 :)

@kupus - I doubt you can buy the Saab for under €2k. Great car for the money, but it's not bangernomics...

Nah they're pretty shiote compared to the older stuff. They creak, they break, the plastics are sub Toyota/Korean, the suspension falls out of them and they are not that nice of a place to be in.

Better to spend your money on a well kept 9-5 or wait for a facelift 9-3 which was a far superior car.

    @ Kupus,
sorry to drag this off Topic, but why in gods name can't the seller wash the f*cking car !
Speaks volumes about the seller imo.

I've gone to view a few cars in the past that were dirty in the pics and they turned out to be two of the more genuine examples I've seen.

The other few examples I've seen were at dealers and were tarted up junk, polished to the hilt but rough underneath the shine.

A neighbour of mine has a 99 avensis from new which was never washed from day one until last year, not a swirl mark in sight:D

The guy who bought mine got a much nicer car with far less mileage for less than that. With 4 brand new tyres (Chinese :o). With much nicer proper Saab wheels too :)

Edit - I kinda miss my Saab. A little bit. Not as much as my youngest daughter who is unimpressed with my current car and wants the Saab back (or so she tells me on a daily basis :D)

Yes agreed, however, you get my point....
It makes a difference. You can tell the advertisements that are dealers and the ones that are genuine sellers that just want rid of the car. They couldn't be bothered to wash, tax or NCT it. They just want it out of the yard/drive.
You can get some diamonds like that.
However, someone who thinks that the car will sell on its own (VAG Diesel or Toyota ) or whatever, just couldn't be bothered to wash the car 'cause it will sell anyway.....
Jesus - it drives me mad. Anyway, washing the car helps the sale. Having it dirty doesn't. You can choose.

I definitely agree on washing the car when putting it up for sale.

The point I was making was that the cars I thought looked rough from the pics actually turned out to be in pretty good condition under the layer of dirt.

Now I know it doesn't always work like this but I wouldn't dismiss a car with a bit of dirt on it until I've viewed it.

    That ^^^

I'm not into washing my cars at all. Let alone polishing / detailing them. Shame on me. I'm also the worlds worst photographer. This doesn't help me when I'm selling my cars so I have to rely on buyers like JohnBoy26 who can see through this...

There are enough car washes around the country so you're probably no more than a few miles from the nearest one. Worth a few quid if you're hoping to sell, IMO...

Yup like I said - Vectras aren't everyones cups of tea.

And okay - I do get that the C wasn't perfect reliability wise - but I thought (lol) that the big massive issues were the 150 bhp 1.9 CDTI swirl flaps, the 2.2 petrol timing chain lubrication issues (which I thought there was a fix for but not sure) - the odd electrical tantrum plus heavy on suspension.

Okay im sure theres a few other niggly things on them - but from what I recall - the 1.9 150 swirl flaps and the 2.2 petrol issues - and some issues with dual mass flywheels - were the only big - don't touch one of these ever type issues.

I suppose what has them up on my radar as potential candidates for this tread is that I see them as being a newer model just coming into bangernomics range - and were part of a newer generation of cars from the motor industry that moved things forward in terms of safety.

So you were moving from 1999 cars with 2/3 stars NCAP safety ratings to the 02/03 newer gen cars (cars in general not just Vectras) with 4 to 5 star NCAP safety ratings.

Im sure someone will be along to tell me that actually the Vectra only has a 2 star rating for some reason :D.

In all honesty though - ive always being under the impression that the Vectra C - in say petrol form (2.2 aside) were fairly reliable
