Adding marathon and 5 miles, updating for faster half and 10k. Missed out on the 3k by 3 seconds. Unlikely there'll be any further improvements or additions.

Time to swap in that dusty old number and upgrade to a much more respectable looking 800m PB. :)

Race went perfect really. Went off a bit fast in 31.5 but went through the bell in 67, and both my next 200s were 33/34 ish. Even splits pretty much at 67 seconds.

A nice sign of things to come whenever I make the move up to 800m, which hopefully won't be for a few years.

With the 10 round numbers being heavily favoured towards distance runners, these 2 will remain the only ones I knock off. However, for interest sake I had a look on the IAAF tables to see what this 800m time equates to over the mile at it comes to a 5:02. Not for a second saying I could run that right now. There is no chance I could off 400 training, but it does bring back memories of that infamous thread a few years back where a certain poster (who will remain nameless) said I hadn't a hope in hell of getting remotely close to it. :)

I propose we make the 800m target 140 seconds next year. Still a round number, but more of a challenge.

That's a great time. Well done! On the subject of being geared towards distance runners, I would've thought that it has a pretty reasonable distribution across the range. The fact that nobody has managed to complete the set speaks volumes for the fact that it's a already a pretty reasonable challenge.

On the subject of tweaking the 800m target: one could just as easily argue the case of bringing in the 5k target to 18 minutes (it shares the same relationship to the 10k, as the 800m does to the mile (give or take a couple of metres)), but that would eliminate half of the achievements in the 5k table. Same goes for the 90 minute half marathon target. It would only serve to remove participation form those events (and offer stimulus to a very few people). Your proposal is a little self-indulgent (like me completing a sub 2:40 marathon and coming back the next day, to say that the target should be moved to sub 2:45).

It definitely is a very reasonable challenge. What I meant by it being more geared towards distance runners is that it is far more likely for a good marathon runner (long side of spectrum) to tick off a good 9 at least, than it is for a good 400m runner (short side of the spectrum) to tick off even half that amount. Then again I suppose it's hard to put a 100 and 200 into it as there are no obvious round numbers, and if they were included in a 12 round numbers type thing then nobody would ever complete the table. It definitely is more geared towards distance runners, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think Kurt's initial idea was to get distance runners to realise how difficult some shorter targets are and to encourage more participation in those events here, and I think it has worked.

Fair point. The 800 to the mile is no different to the 5K to 10K. In fairness though I've been saying all along that the 800 target (both the initial one, and the current one) is weak, and even before this current post I have run sub 2:20 on a couple of occasions, as far back as 8 months ago.

As one of those who has only just scraped the 5k standard by 1 second, I wholeheartedly agree that the standards should be left as they are.
Over the next few years, I would hope to improve to make a few more of them, but there's no way I'll ever hit them all.
While people of a competitive club level will have no problem achieving many of them, some of us middle of the pack runners like to have something to aim for and brag about.
To make them more difficult to achieve would rule out the chances of too many ever reaching them.

The original idea was a Big 8, and the shortest distance was a mile.

By self-indulgent, I didn't mean 'selfish', just so we're clear. I meant better serving your needs. Last year (my first ever 800m) I ran 2:19 for 800m, so taking me as an average runner who would be just within touching distance of most of the targets, that'd suggest that 2:30 would probably be a target that would have more runners giving it a shot. If for example the 400m target were dropped to 57, instead of 60, to be honest, I'd never attempt a 400m race again. Ever...

I think I'd agree with this - someone geared towards shorter distances (probably from 800m up) should find the first 5 targets as easy as a sub 3 marathoner would find the second 5, albeit some more challenging than others. Someone scraping under sub 3 might find the sub 60 10m a little difficult but the other 4 should be handy.

I like the fact that it encourages folk to try their hand at a range of different events, and there seem to be quite a few people attempting to complete a good range. Will throw my hat at them all (minus the marathon, probably) next year.

I can't get inside the head of the person that set this up but if I could:rolleyes:, I would like to think that the reason he set it up was to encourage people to have a go at a variety of distances and provide the impetus for this. It worked for me. Not a chance I would have given the 400m distance a go otherwise and I now understand how difficult it is to run one lap as fast as you can and the acute, albeit short lived pain that this brings.

Chivito, you're giving out about the shorter distance events not being challenging enough and you're not even willing to give the other 8 events a go because they are too challenging for you. The 800m might be one of the easier ones on the board but it's certainly a reasonable challenge that would take a decent level of fitness to accomplish. It's not like you absolutely smashed the two and a half minute target anyway like some of the middle distance specialists on here.

I think the sub-60 10 mile is tougher than both of them!

I don't think there is anything "soft" in running sub 5 minute mile pace for 800m. As Krusty says the 800m time may seem soft to you (Chivito) as it is more suited to your style of training, most people would say the 20 minute 5k is soft although I doubt you'd be able to hit that target as your 400m training would fail you (that's not meant as an insult by the way, just a statement of fact!). The same can be said for long distance runners about the 800m target, it is a tough target to hit off that type of training.

Might as well update some of my times when I'm here. Didn't get to hit as many of the times as I hoped this year. I lowered my 5k time to 17:49 (17:45 on my stopwatch but 17:49 is the time I was given so will go with that). Also ran a new 10k PB in a tough cross country race, think I can a lot more off that on the road but won't do it before the year ends. I also ran 30:00 dead for 5 mile in a cross country race, annoying!

Never actually ran an 800m race although I split 2:30 several times in a 1500m race but that doesn't count unfortunately. The only 400m race I ran I dropped out at 300m as I blew up a bit in the hurricane like conditions that day! Then I haven't ran any of the longer races over 10k. The only other one I might chance this year is the mile, think I was in shape to run low 4:50's a few times this year but maybe not a minute, might try it anyway!

With the exception of the 10 mile, there is not a single other distance on that table that I have not attempted during my life. :) I used to run 5K's, 10K's, half and full marathons (incredibly badly) before I turned to the track. Even lately I have run a number of mile time trials as part of my winter training. I have run a 1500m race (close enough) at the end of a decathlon. I even ran a 5 mile race organised by my club (well 8km, but again, close enough) during my off season, in the remarkable time of 36 minutes, although the surface it was run on probably added a minute or two to my time.

I said earlier that the challenge favours distance runners. This is not a complaint, it is just a statement of fact, and I recall it being mentioned by others earlier in the thread. Think about it, if you come from your side of things (Marathon, extremely aerobic) it is no real skin off your back to attempt anything from 800m up to half marathon. Even the 800m, while very short, still has a huge aerobic element to it. The 400m is the exception for you of course, and is the one event which is completely different for you. For myself on the otherhand, who runs 400m as my main event, to make the step up to making reasonable attempts at the other targets, particularly the longer ones is close to impossible. To do well in these events you need mileage, and lots of it. By running 50-60 miles a week or whatever I will succeed in slowing myself down over one lap. It makes no sense for me to try these distances. It would be akin to you dropping all your mileage and replacing it with deadlifts, squats and bench press. I'm pretty certain you wouldn't consider doing that.

I've always said that it is easier to step down and try a distance which you are not comfortable with than it is to step up and do likewise. This is why good 800m runners can manage a good 400, but good 400m runners are less likely to manage a good 800m. There is a small aerobic element in the 400m which a distance runner coming down can work with. There is nothing anaerobic about a marathon!

Again, I am not complaining about the challenge favouring distance runners. I don't think it is a bad thing. I was just stating it when saying that 2 of these was all that I would be managing (though a sub 3 kilometre would be something I would feel confident of achieving had it stayed as one of these challenges).

I accept people's point about the 800m target staying at 2:30, and it is still a reasonable target for a sub 3 marathonner coming well down in distance. One thing though, the difference between 2:15 and 2:30 is equivalent to a 24 minute difference in a marathon. If somebody ran 24 minutes inside a marathon target no doubt you would say he/she smashed it. :)

Shaved another 14 seconds off the 5k yesterday. Don't think I could ever get near the times for the distances below the 5k especially 400m!

    Well done con
Had planned to do that 5K myself but did not make it there

Thanks dna. Fast course in fairness and ideal conditions. Lovely soup after!

Here's a report on a recent mile attempt, a Christmas present for the critics who say I don't attempt enough distance runner events on this table. :)

Sub 5 is never on the cards off 400m training. Ran 5:29 which given the lack of competition and a 300m in the legs 30 minutes earlier, was as good as I expected, and pretty much matches up to the 5:04 1500m at the end of decathlon in February. If I had a proper knowledgeable pacer who I could just tag onto then 5:15 right now is there I think, but in these circumstances it was never going to happen.

Finishing up a long year of racing in style! :) Just one pesky hundredth of a second from the perfect finish.

With all that talk about more challenges for the fast folks I might as well argue that there should be some targets for us ultra joggers as well :D

    sub-5 39.3 miles
    sub-7 50 miles
    sub-8:30 100k
    sub-17 100 miles

All roughly equivalent to a sub-3 marathon ;)

Isn't finishing one an achievement in itself.?
