Chains give trouble on the earlier ones so they're deffo out. I lift the bonnet once a week so thought I'd spot the oil level rising on the 2L

I think the point is - do you really want to have to deal with another catastrophic failure with a car? :P

That's where the problem lies. If it's using oil AND the level rises it will look the same. That means you'd be blissfully unaware of diluted oil not doing its job properly. Unless you get one very fresh and service it religiously I wouldn't buy one.

The dpf is the culprit but it's not the only issue they have either.

It's a 2008 with 100km and a FSH at a main dealer who are offering a 12 month unlimited warranty for parts and labour.

You should talk to R.O.R about them. As I remember he was talking about the 2008 on Mazda 6 diesel in terms of not being reliable but can't remember the full story so your better of to ask him direct. Still I wouldn't touch one specially when the reason your changing is to try and get a good reliable car. But that's just my opinion and hope you find something that you like :)

The garage also has an old model Mazda3 Sporthatch with a 2008 reg 1.6HDI and a decent spec. It has 80km and again a 12 month warranty. Better bet?

Pretty high for a 4 year old Petrol that gets plenty of ragging. But I do agree, it's pretty poor design on VW's part. Much like the rubber diaphragm on the diverter valve. It was cheap, not well designed.

Has the aftermarket not stepped up with a redesigned version? Or something found elsewhere in the VW OEM parts bin that would last longer?

Ah your not really giving us great options here :pac: it's not too bad that your getting a 12 month warranty. But there's only 120k km on mine and you know the trouble I've had. Plus the Mazda 3 has a dpf on top of it all which can cause trouble. If I had to chose I'd probably take the 3 over the 6 put I don't think I'd buy either if you know what I mean. Was it only Mazda your looking at ?

I'm looking at everything but was trying to narrow the search down to cars I like or have driven and enjoyed. I did take a C5 1.6HDI out this evening. Very nice car but it felt big and fat.

What about an auris 1.4 d4d they have about 12 of them where my dad works and they give no trouble plus my dad said they are lovely to drive obviously very economical too. I can't really think of anything else of the top of my head astra 1.7 cdti could be worth a look too.

I did drive a UK one and thought it not bad but I reckon I'd hate it after a day

I know what you mean there not exactly the best lucking and the inside lacks abit in areas. I suppose the best thing to do is look at/ drive as many different cars as you can.

I was in a Mazda 6 for the first time today, a 08 one I think and was shocked at how cheap the interior was, I have always admired the exterior styling and guess I just felt it would be a little bit nice inside, it seriously felt like the cheapest car I have ever been in with the exception of the Mitsubishi Spacestar I test drove years ago. Very light plastics everywhere.

I wouldn't totally agree. They're nothing to look at but bar the bit on top of the dash over the dials and led read out I thought it was very decent. If anything they seemed to look cheaper than they were and very solidly built too. Had one small creak in mine and it was my own doing. Boring as hell to look at though.

Thats funny you have the opposite opinion, what year was your one? It may have been an older model I was in, nothing too fancy on the dash. I do like the styling, it looks kinda like an accord from a distance, maybe it was my high expectations which formed my opinion.

    Was an 11 reg one.

Well, I will keep an open mind and try a few more.

Actually thought they were nice and solid, much more so than the VAGs I'd had. Few cheap bits but couldn't mark or dent anything in it.

ok, I noticed a new sound today when I press the brake pedel, its a click sound and is coming from around the hand brake area. It sounds just like this video.

    Any ideas?

Drop the tank they said. Be grand they said..... What a c*nt of a job it was! One of the bolts rang, such a mess to get it out.....

Plus side I now have a new set of arb bushes behind, slop has gone :D tank no longer pisses diesel everywhere and I've re engineered the down pipe so no annoying blow. Also means I can live a little bit longer as the smoke/diesel fumes aren't coming into the cabin :)

On the downside, the exhaust has melted my bumper  some sheet steel will have to cover that mess up. Now I have to add a back bumper to the shopping list

Probably! Sure there's plenty time (i hope) to go shopping for one, I'm thinking of getting anthracite alloys for the car, my brake dust today made it look like anthracite whatever way the light was shining on them and they looked rather nice!
