Sheep wool/fleece

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but as someone with totally no experience of spinning etc, I would like to be able to get hold of some sheepswool in order for a small group of crafty friends to try cleaning,washing, carding, spinning,etc. At this stage we are not fussy about wool types or staple lengths etc, just a cheap source of a fairly small amount of fleece to practise on.

I do know enough to be aware that shearing takes place in late spring, so its not the best time to ask, but is there anyone in the south east area that might be able to help?

I have 3 black-browntipped, one charcoal fleeces here near Athenry Galway sheared back in June; also have 5 lamb's fleeces from a week ago... I'd sell the blacks for a tenner and the lambs for a fiver? How's that sound? could arrange to meet you if you like

the blacks are from 1/4 Jacob sheep - very soft so they'd make nice scarves, socks etc. had daft idea of spinning myself so I kept them; gone off the idea now

Wow, lotsa wool, the galway wool sounds nice but I don't really want to go all the way from Waterford at the moment, we are still figuring out how to do it at the moment! So thanks for that!

We are in roscommon. just talked to the 'boss' appearently a large part of it is accounted for with weaving and felting. What sort of quantity are you looking for?

Thanks epicmoe. I'm afraid Roscommon is a bit too far too

at the moment. As I say we are beginners, interested in the historical aspects of spinning etc, for the moment it just needs to be 'wool' and probably only a single fleece, so it would not be a shipping order!

I have had a couple of pms that suggest I can get some in the south east so I will go with one of those, many thanks!

By the way - how much would a hand-spinning wheel cost - I was looking into it, and bottom of the range seemed to be €250 new or so! Are your group buying one in co?

We are actually coming at the whole thing from a slightly different angle, so we will not be looking for a spinning wheel, its really more knowing how the processes worked and learning the basics from a historical point of view, rather than perfecting spinning and weaving etc.

Hi there! I do realise this thread is old, but I was wondering if someone still has raw fleece available for a hand spinner?

I'm an avid hand spinner who moved to Ireland not long ago. I would love to get my hands on some local fleeces. As you can see I'm in Galway
