Time Machine "old backups" issue

    I'm having issues with my Time Machine backups. My 500gb external drive is near capacity but instead of automatically deleting backups it's just giving me warning messages.

    I've tried to delete old backups manually but it takes ridiculously long time.

    I'm on ML. Can anyone help please?

    A HDD has a limited life. A backup drive with T.M. has a fairly hard life and should be replaced periodically. I would label it, stick it on a shelf and connect a new one of larger capacity.

    I’ve encountered similar issues with Time Machine when it’s running out of space. It’s a well known problem. I usually end up just wiping the drive and starting over. If you want to keep your backup history, get a new hard disk.

    Alternatively, delete the oldest backup and leave it over night.

    sorry to jump in on this thread but my hd in the mbp is 500GB with 277GB used the back up uses 788GB to me that seems very large? i deleted some of the older backups but the size of the TM hasn't reduced. is there something else that i am supposed to do?
