Anybody ride anything other than continental tyres by choice?

I'm on continental GP4000's because coming from triathlon where they've the reputation for having a low rolling resistance, accidentally quiet aero and decent puncture protection.

Almost everywhere I look I see people riding them, no problem with that, just wondering are they many people choosing another tyre that they prefer for whatever reason that may be.

I've asked others who I see on Schawalbe, Michelin etc why they've chosen those tyres and often been because the LBS recommended them, they were cheap or they were not even aware what tyres they were on.

So anybody consciously riding something other than contis and why? Whats the secret?

Vittoria Rubino Pro by choice, though I'll accept Zaffiro Pro as well. Good grip and puncture protection. Nice colours too.

Rubino Pro for every day use. Great tyres.
Schwalbe Ultremo ZXs for special occasions.

Long time ago I used to ride on Vittoria Diamente (sp?) and I found their puncture resistance was awful. So I moved to conti's by choice.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the commuter (12,000 puncture free kms on first pair and very little sign of wear)

Panaracer Ribmos on the recreational bike (No punctures yet - on second set)

    Why fix what's not broken?

You must have been doing it wrong. I was riding Diamante's (sp :)) and barely got a puncture until I ripped the sidewall apart when I was riding hard over some 'real' North County Pave.

schwalbe lugano, cos only these were available in my LBS at the time of great need for new tyres

Whatever you choose to wear, please, let they be black.

Tyres should be black, not the colour of your bike or some other odd matched up colour.

Gum sidewalls ok, or else black.

    Black.

I ran GP4000s black chilli and really liked them, great all rounder.
I had Vittoria Open Corsa Evos for a while, they run really fast but they're a bit fragile for Irish roads and weren't very sure footed in the wet.
I bought a pair of Ksyrium sls that came with Michelin Pro 3s and found them good so I've now moved on to Michelin Pro 4s.
All the online guff rates them as fantastic in the wet or dry.
Haven't had them out in the rain yet, we shall see.

You are a khaki coloured bombardier, it's Hiroshima that you're nearing.

I was about to buy some continentals to replace my current tyres, but now you all have me looking at the Vittoria colours :D

Veloflex Master & Vittoria Corsa CX

Both top quality tyres that I use on dry days.

You have to change tyres if its wet? Unless you live in Dubai that must be a bit awkward especially for commuting.

I definitely wouldn't use veloflex tyres for commuting. They're on s good set of wheels that don't get used every day.

For every day use, I have continental Grand Prix or Michelin pro 3 tyres.

I ve been commuting on Veloflex masters but while they are awesome to ride they are too fragile for that, I will be going back to gp4000s for commuting. They last longer as well. I toyed with the idea of using tubs for that too but the cost of them put me off.

All my other wheels have tubs though, veloflex and FMB.

Durano plus on the road bike, chosen for grippiness an puncture resistance primarily. From reviews, much grippier and better handling than gatorskins in the wet, much lighter than marathon or marathon plus. One puncture in two years, and a lot of truly crappy l-roads covered. Marathon supremes on the hybrid, two puncture over the same period, though currently back on Marathon CX to take in a few coilte trails.

    Vittoria Open Pave
    Conti GP4000s
are what I usually have on.

On one bike at the moment I have a cheap Hutchinson tyre on front and an Ultremo on rear - both are fine.

Vittoria megacheapo for me (Rubinios - €15ea from CRC earlier this year). Usually get around 10k from them. Plenty of grip for my levels of cowardice/speed.

Hutchinson Intensive, seem to be a good all round tyre and only 1 (self inflicted through not enough psi) puncture in 2 years.

Michelin Krylions if I can get them, but they're becoming rarer.

Less keen on their replacement - the Pro4.

Does anyone use latex tubes, and what's their experience?

vittoria diamante pro II they dont make em anymore (the ones with a herringbone tread) find them great - tend to change the back for a rubino pro for the winter

keep finding odd old diamante pro for sale so buy them when i see them (the new ones look much more of a racing tyre rather than a race/training tyre)

Have a partly worn one here if ya want. Its a Radial version.

Ultremo ZXs 23s after blowing out a Conti GPS4000 sidewall. The ZX goes to 140 psi whereas the GPS4000s goes to 120. 130 psi on the rear seems to suit me better as I'm a large lad but I run it at 115 at the front. Contis were comfy and smooth but the Ultremos run fast as hell at 130.

+1 for the Durano+, my experience is the same, very grippy, work well in the wet, and reasonable, but sub-marathon plus, puncture resistance. They do wear alarming fast tho...
