For those of you who have completed the tús scheme, has anybody at all got a job out of it??? Seems like everyone I know who did it found it a complete waste of time as they're back on the dole again. I live near 1 of these interview centres and i see over a dozen cars parked outside it all the time, what are they doing in there all day everyday!! having group therapy sessions and all talking about how they can't get a job and listening to some dope telling them how to write a CV!?

I doubt it but anyway to sign for credits your still have to be available for and genuinely seeking work.

So would they keep hounding you to go on schemes I wonder, I'd guess yes.

    o joy
    just saw this

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has announced that 3,000 long-term unemployed will be asked to work with councils

    calling this scheme Gateway, same tus hours and pay wise, but this time it will be for 22 months but this time victims will need to Have been continuously unemployed for at least 24 months and "signing on" on a full-time basis;

if people say no it seems benefits will be cut off for nine weeks as punishment for jobless people who refuse offers of work or training.

    http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Gateway.aspx

it is believed Environment Minister Phil Hogan wants up to 10,000 long-term unemployed to be taken on by councils in the next two to three years. The new jobs cannot displace existing council jobs.

The Department of Social Protection is hoping 1,500 Gateway places could be filled by the end of the year.

Got a letter too, no way am i going to this interview, I really want a job but do not want "help" from these people!! am signing off, figure the lack of money will be a motivator, worse case scenario I get no job and have to sign back on in few months, and hopefully therefore no longer qualify for this scam as i won't have been signing on continually for the last 12 months!

Sorry but your post smacks of someone who really doesn't want a job....sign off then sign back on so you can avoid work for 12 months??....why not take up a position and use that as a motivator instead? you can quit anytime should you get proper work

There is but lets be honest (was probably a little harsh on balbobiggins) but there are really alot of people out there who don't want to work, scared of it and will come up with all sorts of excuses....principles sminshibles, why not take payment for something (even if not alot) rather than nothing

Hundreds of jobs applied for and 2 interviews in the last few months says i am looking. I'm a qualified accountant with years experience. All i'm saying is i don't see how this scheme can help me, having to work as a janitor or in child care or something like that just seems like it wouldn't help me in the future. Point taken though, a jobs a job but when the government say they have work lined up for you they aren't looking out for your best interests, they don't care about you, your a number on the live register that they want to get rid of. I'm being horribly pessimistic about this whole thing i know, apologies!, especially to those who have enjoyed their time on the scheme!

You get paid into your bank account so don't know what your tus person is ****eing on about cheques and the PO for.

Despite what Tus make you think, you're not obliged to take the first placement that comes along. If you don't think it's suitable for you then tell them and there shouldn't be any remifications once you have a valid reason for doing so. They handed me a pile of job descriptions when I first went in and I just told them very clearly what I was looking for myself and what I was willing to do.

Do have to say though that I'm massively pissed off with my placement at the moment. It's not Tus's fault but some employers who take people on Tus take advantage of the fact that if you lose the job then you lose your dole.

Was all going well for me until the last week or so and I was loving not just sitting on my arse applying for jobs all day but now they're just taking the piss out of the power they have over me. Have to get up at 4 to be at an event for 7 and I was given the impression that I had no other choice but to say yes. Do your research beforehand and you should be fine

Thanks - just hope my payment hasn't somehow been botched up.

Awful that you have to get up so early-that's just taking advantage. I can see the same happening to me. I was told I'd have set hours but now it seems that's gone out the window and I can be called upon at any time. At present I'm sitting around waiting for an email to come through telling me what to do next.

I took this placement because I've heard from other people in my area that I'm better off getting this particular Tus supervisor off my back. When people have looked for alternatives to the first placement offered, they've been sent out picking up litter/cleaning the streets (and then that is the second placement offered so if they refuse it, their money has been cut). So I reckon I'm better off with admin work.

I'm looking for alternative work now and if I get it, I'm out of this country for good!

i havent heard back from my interview place whether i have to go tomorrow or not. how hard is it to read an email and write a reply... maybe ill ask for their job as they are clearly incompetent. i can understand the negativity at this scheme as it hasnt exactly been lighting my world on fire so far.

I've had a lot long waits for email replies too. The problem is that they're often out of office rounding up more people to take part in the scheme.

If you have a contact number it's probably best to call. I found contact details for my lot online.

Apologies back, really didn't think the scheme was aimed at someone with your qualifications.....name and number it is then

TUS could be very beneficial i think, there are many community groups who would love a placement such as you to help with accounts, funding applications, statistical reports to funders etc. There may not be a vacancy on their books, but a good placement Officer will ring round seeing who would like a qualified accountant! There will be a clamour.

Just a follow up, went to my interview after no one answered my email, they are as baffled as I am as to why I got called having worked part time until March 31st, aswell as attending college. they are looking into it but I still did the interview to cover myself with the social welfare, they arnt sure they have anything for me as I'm in IT and any of the courses they run I'm more of less qualified to teach but they will get back to me if anything comes up.......

    And?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I really don't see how your point is relevant to the point I made. Tus participation is managed by local partnership companies. Each partnership company manages the payroll. DSP have nothing to do with how a participant is paid. That is managed by each partnership company.

I am very confused as to what to do here. When I agreed to my placement I was told my hours would be a full working day Monday and Tuesday and a half day Wednesday to make up the 19.5 hours. However, since it has started (and I have signed everything!) I've been told that I can be given work at any time - including weekends and I am meant to do it there and then. Essentially I am 'on call' as it were seven days a week. I can't really make any plans or do anything else.

I said this to the Tus supervisor and pointed out that I only agreed to this on the basis of set hours. They just sort of rolled their eyes at me and shrugged. This is the same Tus supervisor, by the way, who can't seem to figure out how I'll actually be paid.

Do I have any rights here? I feel like these people own my life right now. I am constantly stressed out and not even sleeping. They seem to think they can call me at any time of the day and do so frequently.

What does your contract say? Does it give specific hours?

    I haven't been given a contract.

I was told to pick hours either Mon, Tues and half day Wed or five mornings a week - I opted for the first. Tus said they needed this for time sheets.

I then met with the supervisor the other day who said that for this position I could actually be called upon at any time. They told me this after everything had been signed.

I'm not sure what to do now.

Next time I meet them I will ask for a contract (If I'm meant to get one?) But those were the hours that were agreed upon - so those are the hours that should be on the contract.

    Don't I know it. :(

I thought doing this scheme would give me a bit of breathing space/get them off my back, but let me tell you, it's quite the opposite! I have been lied to and bullied from the very start.

There was no mention of a contract, just 'oh, I'm not sure how exactly you'll get paid' and 'by the way - those hours are just a guideline. The work can be sent through to you at any time.'

    Talk about taking advantage.

You should send the tus supervisor a letter or email stating

A: You want clarity on how you will be paid
B: That you agreed before starting that you would only work certain hours and that you would like a contract clearly stating this

See how he or she responds - if he or she responds poorly ask to speak to the Tus manager within the partnership and explain to him or her why you are unsatisfied and that they cannot arbitrarily change the conditions of what you signed upto.
