I'm generally supportive of the proposed new forum/sub-forum and think it could well indeed work and generate more 'sheep' discussion, but some things need to be borne in mind:

I've done a quick countback, and I see a rough average of 1 'sheep' thread per page. 20 posts/page, so approximately 5% of threads have a sheep-specific title.
These are surprisingly similar to the forestry-thread numbers we were looking at almost 2 years ago, prior to the creation of the Forestry forum.
While far from being a hugely busy forum, the Forestry forum has been a modest success.
It's getting approximately 4-5 posts/day and 1 new thread/day, which is a lot more on the subject that when it was in the general Farming forum.
I suspect that 'sheep' discussion would similarly increase if it had its own space.

Bear in mind though, that the Farming patch here is just a tiny corner of the whole Boards.ie website, and the admins and site managers are looking at a much bigger picture.
New forums add workload to the hardware, software, and personnel of the site, so they need to shown to be potentially of benefit to the whole community.
The raw numbers above by themselves do NOT make a case for the creation of a new forum; they are far from overwhelming and 'sheep' subjects in are no way threatening to dominate the Farming forum.

In order to have any chance of success, the forum proposal needs to make a good case that 'sheep' discussion is being drowned out at the moment, and would expand and grow if it was focussed into its own area rather than falling through the cracks in the fast-moving general discussion in the main Farming forum.

I'd also urge everyone to make themselves familiar with the Forum requests Charter and procedure BEFORE posting a proposal or reply.

Two things off the top of my head, sheep farming IMO will have more to talk about than forestry. I'd imagine firstly there are more sheep farmers than forestry owners, and there are also more subjects within sheep, plus discussion of individual animal cases, breeds & types, disease, dosing, nutrition, genetics, marts & factories, yadda & etc.

Second thing is, that sheep discussion is being lost in other farming discussion is precisely the problem from my POV. That, I think, lessens the input from sheep farmers as it gives the impression there are very few sheep farmers on here, or it's an unimportant topic. A dedicated sub forum will encourage more sheep related discussion given a chance.

All they can say is no, question is do they want sheep discussion to grow here, or elsewhere?

count me in too, agree with above, i didnt think we had as many sheep farmers on here which is encouraging

if the format was improved maybe it would also encourage more sheep farmers to join

Sheep are a bit more high maintenance than trees, and should provoke more discussion. Also lots of forestry owned by investors, managed by companies etc, so there should be enough folk with questions to support lively discussion.

No time today to properly go through reading the procedures etc. got to move sheep, mind kids, then head off for a farm meeting. I'll get the formal thread on the road tomorrow if that's ok with everyone.

The stickys on the Forum Request forum will tell ye about proper procedure for voting etc. in the meantime :)

Take another few weeks before we know for sure. Many the slip between cup and lip.

That month wasn't long passing, two weeks until we get a decision on a sheep forum :)

Just a thought regarding setting up the Sheep specific forum.
would it be possible to have the newest posts always appearing on page 1, instead of page 42 or whatever.

Any update on getting our sheep forum. The decision should be due around now is it?

I'll let you :D Not in a rush with the forum, would be delighted to see it up and running, probably why I'm not bulling over it.

I notice the prefix thingy was changed on the forum request thread, yesterday I think, to "ongoing", this means:

    Ongoing
The request has been assessed and has enough support to start the process of admin discussion. If no policy reason exists that would stand against creation of the forum the request is passed to the relevant category mods for their input. If the category mods think it would be a good fit for their category but would be better as a subforum of an existing forum then the request is discussed with the existing mods. This process should take 3 weeks but can take longer as all participants are given time to respond.

Fair play, tis nearly as hard as getting planning for a one off house!;)

Well, if you don't have the patience to wait for the Sheep Forum, "my little pony " forum is formed, up and running. Not much veterinary advice, however.

    [MOD]

I've split off all the off-topic content posted here into threads of their own.

As the forum has been created, this thread is now redundant.
    Thread closed.
