And lads, we're talking cheap college drink here, none of that fancy craft shtuff!

Anyone ever have Kinsey or Tesco vodka? That stuff will kill. It may as well be paint stripper!!

This stuff will kill ya. someone had a drop of this at a party. now i mean a drop. They were hoarse for the evening

This. I mean I need something that I can drink that isn't absolute ****e. I can't stand Bud, Dutch, Gallahad etc. at all, but I don't want to be buying Eight Degrees at €2 a bottle either :L

Not at all, but I took a bottle of 80% back from holidays with me.

Any time I ever had Absinthe it was the same story, I brought some back from Prague one time.

I swear some girl was trying to get me hammered one night by feeding me absinthe til I was f*cked. Then when I was like here you have some, she was like...nah....!!

As far as decent cheap drink goes Colm have you ever had Tuborg or Fosters? Relatively cheap but still a decent beer. 3 euro pints of Fosters in college bar, where would ya be goin!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,166 ✭✭✭Stereomaniac

Exactly. I always drank whatever was cheapest in the bar, before I retired. Fosters was the big one at the UCD bar. I remember being in Budapest a few years ago though and Tuborg was more expensive than the other beers that they had on draft. Everything else seemed to be locally produced and the Tuborg was seen as this high-end drink because it was imported!

Absinthe is an evil, evil drink. I drank that my first week of college (bear in mind I only started drinking that week)... Never again. The taste was just horrific and it burned the back of my throat. :\

On vodka, I used drink loads of Kulov. €4/naggin in our nearest offie. It's paint stripper, but when you combine it with a can of coke and 4 cans of Druids, you can do your predrinking for ~€10.

Also, we can discuss more expensive stuff too. I mean just because ye're poor and can't afford anything above swill doesn't mean we can't discuss it. :pac:

Open call to Palytoxin to start.

Stonewell Cider, Bradleys in the city stock it! :D

Have to agree with whoever said to stay away from Tesco Vodka. It never ever ends well.

My personal preference is for Huzzar/Smirnoff with cranberry juice or Southern Comfort and blackcurrant. That's yum, although it can get a bit sweet after a while.

I never used to drink cider because even one glass would make me feel very ill but I recently tried Aspall Cyder and I've been converted. That stuff is so so nice! I think it's only available on tap in places that do craft beers and such (Crafty Fox/Mickey Martins that I know of for any Limerickans here) but it's not that expensive.

ps. am I losing my mind or did we have a thread like this not that long ago?

Tequila gets me everytime, the last time I was out they were only three euro so I had five of them (I know, I know) and was walking around/dancing/chatting for ages being all 'I'm not drunk at all, why isn't this having an effect on me???', found a video on my phone the next day that I took of some random guy in Supermac's eating some chicken. :/ Not really sure how that happened tbh.

I pretty much only drink Jack Daniel's.

My new spirit drink, for when cans just aren't doing it, will b brandy and red bull, what a volatile combination!!

As well as that a Captain Morgan and Orange goes down a treat I find!

Ah Supermacs in Eyre Sq, what a unique place, the stuff that goes down there after a night out is hilarious.

Where would one procure these ciders? The off-licences I've been in have had woeful selections of cider tbh.

MacIvors you can get in O'Briens. It's expensive enough, I think about €2.50 a bottle maybe a little more, I go out so rarely these days that when I do I don't mind spending a little extra and buying something lovely.

As for the others, any decent craft beer pub should have em. My friends are all into their beer so we usually end up in those pubs and I'll get a nice cider or two there.

One thing to point out, if people are going to start drinking craft beers/ciders, keep an eye on the alcohol percentage, we had a few beers in work that were close to 10%.

Warning: long, snobby post ahead! :D

I drink very little these days that isn't considered "craft".

The journey began with Bulmers, Kopparberg and Guinness. I couldn't stand other beers at all. Bud, Heineken, Carlsberg, Bavaria, I hated them all. Still do!

Then a few years ago I had dinner with a fellow C&H Boardsie, her sister and new brother-in-law, and they introduced me to Cobra beer. I enjoyed that one. :)

That opened the door to trying new things. Asahi, Hoegaarden and Blue Moon came next. They're all quite enjoyable, but not special.

Leffe was my first experience of a certain style of Belgian beer. That led to Duvel, then the Trappist stuff such as Westmalle, La Trappe, Trappistes Rochefort and Chimay. These are the strong ones that Pigwidgeon warns about :P (6.5 - 11.3% ABV.). Delerium Tremens, Kwak and Straffe Hendrik are works of art too. The trick is to get one or two bottles and a decent glass and to enjoy them slowly.

The Irish craft scene is exploding too. Galway Hooker, despite the humorous name, is a great one to start with. It's quite affordable now too. Same with the O'Hara's range (same brewery, Carlow Brewing Co.). 8 Degrees, The Franciscan Well and Stone Well (all Cork), Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne (Kerry), The Porterhouse (Dublin), Trouble Brewing (Kildare) and Whitewater Brewing Company up North are all fantastic. They can be hard to get in different parts of the country though.

€10 spent on the likes of the above tends to be a far more enjoyable drinking experience than cheap beers/spirits & mixers. It's a trial and error process, and tastes vary, but it's well worth experimenting with the smaller brands. I still enjoy the odd cider, and Murphy's and Beamish are just as good as Guinness too. ;)
