I have been good all week honest, didn't run iced my leg to death and foam rolled a lot, I did everything I could have done bar going to physio which I will never to week. I know I can always do the marathon next year but fear the worse.

That was very similar to my week. Struggling myself to get back to fitness and weeks are slipping by. I know I'll be back eventually but i'm worried now about Athlone HM in 4 weeks  and DCM in 10:eek::eek:

Hope this week is a good one for both of us!

Got a appointment for physio tomorrow morning dreading it, really think he will tell me something I don't want to hear. He wants me to bring my shoes in with me.

I hope so it's 10 weeks till DCM I can't afford to be out for more than two weeks or it will be next year.

So went to the physio and turns out my left leg is longer than my right, so when I run more miles my left legs bears the brunt of it. Will be getting fitted for insoles on Friday and will do a few miles to break them in. Dublin Half and DCM are still on the cards depends how I get on with the insoles.

Have a read through this thread :http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056180727 about treating shin splints...

I would be very wary of going down the orthotics/insole route. I think almost everybody has one leg shorter than the other (I have been told that myself by a certain physio who then tried to sell me her own insoles ) and the lazy way of treating injuries is by getting insoles.
Is the same physio who diagnosed you also selling you the insoles? If so I would be looking for a 2nd opinion.....

    +1 on the 2nd opinion.

+1 for a second opinion from a physio who specializes in runners. Cost-wise it's a drop in the ocean to a lifetime of orthotics.

I've been told that by a physio too as she was quite surprised to find that both my legs were the same length! So I guess I screwed up her orthotics selling opportunity:pac::D

Darren hope you are not out of action for too long. Good luck with the recovery

Thanks all, it's not something I'm taking lightly as with everything everyone has an say on. It was my first thought when he mentioned them here we go. I have people saying for and against them.

Sorry to hear about your injury, i know exactly how you feel. If you are unhappy with you initial advice then seek a 2nd opinion certainly. Have you considered someone who is an expert in biomechanics? Like a Podiatrist with expert training, they are brilliant. Sometimes i feel certain people are just trying to sell you stuff!

I was happy with the advice a lot made sence when I thought about it. I know a lot of people who go to the same physio he tells it straight no messing about.

Any way was told I could do a few miles see how I get on and build it from there. I will have a better idea about DCM if I can do it.

I know how heartbreaking it is but hopefully you will be able to do it, fingers crossed for you

Heartbreaking is not the word, should be be at the 10 mile today, I've about 9 weeks to build up to DCM might drop the speed work and build up the miles. Not going to worry about time at this stage

Good idea. A lot of problems can develop doing too much speed work or so I've read, it takes your body time to adjust to running longer and longer distances. Have you tried the insoles yet?

Just got them yesterday after physio visit, I have them in my normal shoes didn't run in two weeks.

    Week 12 + 13 Report

Didn't run in two weeks physio gave the go ahead this week to start running to see how I get on but didn't feel ready for it, I have just been R.I.C.E my leg, also doing cycling to keep the fitness up and keep me sane . Did a 30k cycle today wish it was a run instead.

This injury has given me a lot to think about would like to improve my running form, something I have noticed about my shoes and my physio pointed out my shoe choice

    Asics GT-2170 11m heel drop
    Saucony Guide 8m heel drop
Asics GT 2000 10m heel drop

On my saucony shoes have wear on mid foot, gt 2170 didn't and my gt 2000 dont have much miles on them so not enough wear to tell.

The less cushion seems to improve my running so will stick to them will get more advice when I get new shoes.

Interested to near more on this, just bought a pair of guides, but had a pair of NB 8mm already, don't think I could go back to 12mm.

Hope you make it back soon Darren, I've been there with the shin splints, they can be such a nuisance.
Personally when I went with shoes with less of a heel drop I began to strike more on my midfoot, I couldnt say if this was the reason they have cleared up but my form certainly improved in a big way which is always a good thing.

How long did you have them for? Did you run with the shin splints as well?

This is just my own personal experience with them, I think "shin splint" is a very generic term for lower leg pain anyway so as always defer to a professionals opinion

I had them badly for a few months in the buildup to the Limerick marathon this year and yeah I did run through them which was a poor choice on my part, I certainly wouldn't do it again. The area became very inflamed and tender and extremely painful at times. It took a pretty sedentary 6 weeks after Limerick for them to clear up, I would never run through them again should they flare up.
I got a good few sports massages, apparently the cause for them in my case was a very tight tibialis posterior, but in all honesty I could't tell you if that diagnosis was correct. I also think my footwear played part in it, I was heelstriking like mad in a pair of Brooks Adrenaline and they never truly felt right for me.
The only hard and fast way I personally found for the pain to go away was rest coupled with professional help, I got a masseuse to really go to town on my calfs a few times. I still have a bit of residual pain from them on some runs, but its not nearly as bad as it was.
Best of luck with it, DCM certainly isn't out of sight for you at all yet.

Cheers overpronator, Going against my physio I didn't run last week just didn't feel up to it. Just doing a lot of cycling to keep the fitness at a decent level.

Really worried about DCM fitness wise and how to go about increasing my miles.
