Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me out a bit!
I got offered (And accepted) a place in the Arts course in Nuim for September but originally I had planned to do primary school teaching there but at the moment I'm going to go ahead with the arts course and do teaching through that. I was just curious though, do the arts subjects I choose make any difference to the fact that I want to be a PT teacher? Are there certain combinations of subjects I should study or something?
    Any help would be amazing!!
    Thanks,
    -Donna

    Hey ,

I don't think so , once you have any kind of degree with relevance to teaching you can do the 18 month course in St Pats Drumcondra after your Arts degree. Not sure of the situation in Nuim as primary teaching is only new there, your probably best to ring up the department and enquire.

You do of course have to have higher than a c3 ? in leaving cert Irish to do Primary teaching.

Any Bachelor's degree (provided you meet minimum LC requirements) is sufficient to apply for any of the postgraduate primary teacher training courses on offer:

    Coláiste Mhuire, Marino
    St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra
    Froebel College of Education (NUIM)
    Mary Immaculate College, Limerick
    Hibernia College

At the moment, these courses run for 18 months, however a change to a 2-year course is imminent.

    hello Donna,

I studied arts at nuim aswell. I did maths(1st year only), economics and geography. I then took a year out and worked in a montessori to get experience. During my degree i also worked in a few primary schools when i had days off just for the experience. I then applied to a uni in london to do the pgce its only 9 months over there. And last year i worked in a difficult school in london and completed my probation year. Iv just came home and have started to do the scg irish course and applying for subbing work.

If you want to do Primary Teaching there is always a way. Its hard but you will get there :)
good luck.maynooth is a brill uni i enjoyed every minute there
