    ArcadeCon was awesome :D

There are actually a load of cons coming up, this weekend was comic con, although I didn't get a ticket :( there is nom con, hobocon. I only moved to Dublin recently and was feeling bored and annoyed that there wasn't much to do but there is actually an amazingly diverse organised geeky things and I would really like to get involved.

I am considering starting a twitter account for LGBT geeks in Ireland. I think there is a demand and I don't aim to segregate but to develop a presence, be supportive of other LGBT people and to create a social scene away from the gay bar.

I am just considering names, gaymer while catchy is a bit exclusive (and legally contested). While for me personally gaming is my main interest, I am also interested in other stuff and would happily facilitate others wanting to promote and organise across comics, anime/manga, RPG, PnP, LARP, Cosplay, tabletop. Maybe just simply LGBTgeeksIRL

    I just need a bit of a push . . .

I think something like Irish Gay Gamers or Gay Irish Gamers (IGG, GIG?) would be fine. Don't need to go for the whole quiltbag thing.

    Just throwing out some ideas

Rent out the games center place on Liffey Street for a LAN party (10pm -)

Post a new topic with Steam, Xbox Live, Wii/DS Names, Playstation account names so people can be added and play games against each other?

A gay geek meetup (coffee, beer, whatever :P )

I am a little bit bi-polar at times. I was all hyped to do this Sunday now I am a bit meh. But I will start with a twitter account this evening and I will post a link here. I was just wondering about the name because I was chatting with a female friend and I don't want to exclusionary, gay usually refers to gay men, but I think I will just use gayirishgamers or something like that. GIG is a good acronym.

I saw that place on Liffey street, anyone ever used it? Selection of games seem limited enough. I was also looking through the LAN gaming forum and stuff. I have a steam and xbox live account, although I don't use them for the social side and I barely use xbox live, but I will look into those.

I should also set up an email adress so I can ask for expressions of interest.

I am really annoyed that I missed out on so much this summer due to my own ignorance such as Arcade Con and Comic Con, I am definitely going to nom con the anime/manga con and I am tempted by hobo con although I haven't played much table top or pen and paper and I could never take LARP seriously. But if others are going we could organise meet ups around those.

Now to think of an opening tweet . . .

Well I've heard straight people refer to gay lesbians. :P I think Gay Irish Gamers is fine. Otherwise you end up with trying to please everyone.

My understanding is that for the LAN parties you can book you can bring your own games?

I've set up a twitter page Gay Irish Gamers @GayIrishGamers. You're right, can't please everyone and need an instantly recogniseable name. I've only followed a few people across Irish geek scene and gay scene. I set it up on my phone so limited until get home for work as twitter is blocked on my work PC.

Cheers to Daith for the name!

I suppose a facebook page would be a good step, I am out and all but hate facebook now due to all the vaguely connected people who are now "friends" so a little reluctant to have my name appear with it. But I will get over that and do it eventually.

I know, I am sorry that was one of my worries, but I thought that something simple and easily identifiable was preferable.

I will try to be totally open across LGBTQ and I will try to emphasis that constantly.

Anyone playing Age of Empire II on steam? I would love a multiplayer game of that, they should be over the teething problems by now.

I am think of starting a new thread on boards.ie. Specifically for Gay Irish Gamers, but should I start it here or in gaming and how many posts do I need before I can start a thread. Will the mods be ok with that or will they consider it duplication?

7 followers on twitter woo and got a retweet from gay community news. I will probably ask some of the irish gaming groups to retweet as well.

We have 4 group members on steam. Where else should I start a prescence?

I should be more pro-active but I do work 9 - 5 and I am totally addicted to crusader kings II at the moment.

I'd actually start a FB group. It's easy enough to do, and you can make it as private or public as you want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,250 ✭✭✭Daith

Yeah a FB group would be handy.

I have no problem with you starting a new thread specifically to discuss the group

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

You should try adding The Arcade on Twitter and Facebook. May increase your networking potential.

I am following them on twitter and on FB with my personal account. I will ask for a retweet this evening. We got retweets from GCN (and Labour LGBT oddly enough) but I think it was too early in the day and people missed it.

Please do RT and Share and like etc.

I would be a lot more pro-active in promotion if I wasn't addicted to Crusader Kings II at the moment and Space Battleship Yamato. :)

Use that as a status update. It would cement your credibility as a geek ;)

Has anyone played Gone Home? It's very much not a traditional game, and some people would argue that it's not even a game. It is fantastic though. If it's not a game then it's an interactive story told by piecing together bits and pieces around your home.

Basically, it's 1995 and you arrive home after backpacking around Europe. You find a note left by your 17 year old sister that she's run away, not to follow her and that she'll be ok. Then you wander the home finding out the story of what caused her to leave.

It's really fantastic, parts of it had me in tears. There's nothing else like it out there.

I really enjoyed Dear Esther (well, maybe enjoyed isn't the word) so I'm looking forward to Gone Home. It's on my wishlist but I think I've blown my game budget for the month already. Maybe next month.

I am totally out of touch with pokemon but I am seeing posts about it all over the place and it looks good.

I also want to track down a copy of pokemon origins.

I am actually back playing a Lord of the Rings mod for Medieval II Total War, I couldn't resist since I am actually only reading Lord of the Rings for the first time at the moment.

I haven't played Pokémon in ages, nor do I have a nintendo 3DS, but I might try get my hands on a second hand one and see what the story is. It just seems to be so revamped I'm quite excited!

I've also relogged onto WoW. Don't judge me too much please...

Wind Waker HD FTW!!!!!! Its so beautiful lookin!

Hopfully, this Friday I'll be buying Sonic Lost World for WiiU too.

Pokemon question. I never played any of them, I have 'mon Emerald for the GBA but never tried it, but have it. Should I maybe have a look at X/Y instead as it seems to have been changed for the better?

Wish I understood the whole Pokemon thing.
