I think the problem is we play hardball to not look like pushovers then a team like spurs comes in and says that the club can walk all over them.

Yeah but they get their player, which is the important thing while we're left holding our testicles saying "we're no pushovers".

not much to say about the weekend game.

it felt like a lot of games we had last year, particularly in the first part of last season. we knock, knock and knock again without bashing the door down.

Sturridge made the difference with a bit of quality though. a 0-0 turned into a 1-0.

again, like last season, we're vulnerable to shooting ourselves in the foot with iffy defending.

    thank Christ for Mignolet.

i can't be too critical though. 3 points on the first day is all that matters. i'd like to see us be more clinical though. although, we might be able to be in future, as we only have to face Begovic one more time this season.

fúcking hell, that man can fúck off.

I saw a lot of last season in Saturday the one positive I took was that bit of luck we needed to finish out the game. Our finishing leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not a big believer in coincidence and the fact that we keep creating these heroic performances from opposition keepers. Its become too much of a theme.

Not sure how much of sturridges goal was 'quality'. I thought it lacked power and accuracy I reckon if it wasn't for begovic slip it would've been another save. Having said that, that's at least twice I've seen him score exactly like that so maybe there's something in the shot I'm not seeing.

Just watching that again a few times......Toure and Lucas really should have done better with getting ahead of Jones. Lucas just standing looking at him.

He is 6'4" and almost 14 stone.

I'd call him "agile" rather than slight. ;-)

The interweb has him at 6' 4" and 13 1/2 stone so no he's not small!!

Really? It was a bullet into the corner of the net.

Honestly, have a look at it again. I'm not saying it crawled in, it was saveable. I definitely wouldn't have called it a 'bullet'.

Ya, it struck me on Saturday how much taller he actually is than Reina. I think that home goalie jersey will take some getting used to as well. It's nice, but weird for a goalie, kind of like when refs started wearing blue/green/yellow years back. At least they have seen sense and mostly reverted to black. I'm a believer in green goalies jerseys as well I have to say.

the key to a lot of Sturridge's shots is that he has so little backlift, meaning it gets hit earlier than a keeper might expect.

even if it's not an absolute rocket, it can catch a keeper on the hop.

we must remember also, on Saturday, it did got through Huth's legs, so Begovic was more than likely unsighted.

Penalties are only saveable if you dive the right way. As someone said earlier Mignolet goes the other way and its a 'great peno'.

For me 99% of penalty saves are great saves with dollops of luck thrown in. He did very well to save it and even better again with the follow up.
Delighted for him as he looked a bit nervous a couple of times earlier in the match. Sometimes you just need things to go your way a bit. Its all about confidence.

Yeh, but Jones was really off the mark like a sprinter. Toure was obviously meant to be watching him, got caught watching the ball...

it was a stupid, naive penalty in a lot of ways.

Mignolet did his homework, went the way Walters always does, and saved it. it was still a great dive, but it was in no way a great penalty bar the fact he struck it ok.

Jesus just looking at again and on the other side Sterling standing still as a statue on the other side of Walters.

Maybe they just werent thinking but they should be 100% alert for the rebound. I hope Rodgers and team highlight this to them.

Follow-up save was more impressive than the original one. Up quick and out with the block, great stuff.

It really was a GREAT match - peno save, two shots on the crossbar, one on the post, one off the line, and probably 4/5 other great saves/chance.

As great as La Liga is, you just don't get games like that. Or if you do, it would have been 4-2!

To be honest that was the second time I'd seen that shot/goal combo so I'm inclined to believe there's summit in it. The back lift is a good shout, also the speed at which the play is moving the other direction. The quickness of the shot take off and the direction the keeper is travelling probably encourages the begovic slip.

From a Liverpool based journo, he believes Willian's preference is to join LFC however and consideration for Spurs is only procedure

    Tony Barrett ‏@TonyBarretTimes 1m
For those asking about Willian, what we know for sure is Spurs have gone head to head with Liverpool in the race to sign the Brazilian.

    craig austin ‏@ozzylfc24 2m
conversation ive had this morning the clib are confident they have done enough and dont think spurs can match the offer we have made him

    Karl ‏@Karlton81 1m
Willian choice of destination is down to his personal preference, #LFC have done all they can to try & sign him. We'll have to wait & see.

    Tony Barrett ‏@TonyBarretTimes 2m
Where will Willian end up? Who knows but it suits him and his representatives to play Liverpool & Spurs off against each other.

Liverpool have already agreed terms with Willian and had been confident of completing the deal. (Mirror)

    More Willian.

All joking aside I have read a couple of times that its well known Willian is a Liverpool fan. Not that means anything really, just sayin!

When people ignore the context of stats, which I believe to be an incredibly powerful tool, or use stats badly, I rage.

The sample size of games without Suarez must be tiny. He'll have played in just about every game he was available for selection. I imagine the games he didn't feature in included the easy EL games last year, and the dead rubbers at the end of last season. In the tough games which ye lost, he was typically playing. But there haven't been a lot of those style of games where he didn't play.

That alone utterly devalues the statement which is supposedly 'backed up by the stats.' The sample sizes would have to be equal for that stat to even remotely have use. I remember a similar one about Modric a few seasons back.

The stat on matches without Suarez is accurate as is the stat of wins with him. The reliability of both, though, is low due to small sample size.

If you want to disregard some stats of wins without Suarez then you also have to disregard an equal proportion of losses without him or an equal proportion of wins against 'dead rubber' teams with him.

Again the results will be the same. All we can say with a high probability is that with Suarez we win X%of games and, with a lower probability of happening, we win X+10% of games without him.

Once you start leaving out data points, though, the realibility of your results drop.

Footballers are like everyone else, they lie about stuff like that....or they get measured with their boots on etc. For example Given and Reina were clearly the smallest keepers in the Premier league for years. Shay is listed as being 6"1 and Reina as 6"2 and neither are that tall. I've stood next to Shay Given and there is no way in hell that he's 6 foot 1 inch so I don't know who took that measurement.

Mignolet definitely looks more than 2 inches taller than Reina. It can be hard to judge as they are standing in the goal and keepers naturally hunch and bend the knees for the spring and to stay on their toes.........but you can see it in the tunnel.

When he was waiting for the peno, he had his hands not quite straight and was pushing the bar with a slight hop.

So he's definately more than 5 feet tall.

In fairness, Jones should have been done for encroaching. He was a good few yards inside the box when the penalty was taken
