Should I do the Phil 'Maidens' debating competition?

I am an incredibly, painfully awkward shy person. My IQ drops by about half when under pressure. Public speaking absolutely petrifies me. Is maidens for me? Should I find something a bit less masochistic instead? Thanks :D

(If you're not aware Maidens is an amateur debating competition run by either the Phil or Hist society open to both males and females. It runs the first 10 weeks of each year.)

Go for it, it's not infront of live audience until the final rounds. No point not doing it, ey? You may like it

Sure why not? You'll be fine, they're all quite supportive.

You'll get loads of support the whole way through, with workshops, feedback from rounds etc. There is also practice round and the like. Public speaking is a great skill in itself and tackling the fear head on can only be a good thing, (unless you get a heart attack or something similar)
