I'm afraid your texts won't go over.. They introduced text-saving with WP8, but not unfortunately with any of the old versions of 7. So when you move from one WP8 phone to another you'll be alright.

there's also the save data foe your games and apps - check within the app to see if there's a SkyDrive backup option, many of my most used apps (Passwords, TV Show, VGBC8, whatsapp etc) have this.

the one thing windows phone does really well is your contacts though - everything is synced to your account.
