Family Guy and The Simpsons, two of the biggest cartoons of all time, are to come together in a crossover episode that sees the Griffin family head to Springfield.

The Fox-confirmed episode will be titled The Simpsons Guy and air in autumn 2014.

In it, Peter and the Griffins head on a road trip and end up in Springfield, soon bumping into Homer Simpson who welcomes his ‘albino’ friends to the neighbourhood.

The two disfunctional families quickly become friends, with Stewie being impressed by Bart’s arsenal of pranks and Marge and Lois bonding, though Homer and Peter end up in an argument over which beer is superior: Quahog’s Pawtucket or Springfield’s Duff.

Both seminal animated comedies have referenced each other in the past but this is the first time they have joined forces.

Family Guy took shots at The Simpsons’ shoddy early animation in a previous episode but the rivalry has grown more friendly over time, with Simpsons voice actor Dan Castellaneta giving a one-line cameo in Family Guy in 2012 and creator Seth MacFarlane taking a guest role in The Simpsons in May.

‘FOX hasn’t spent this much money since they took Simon Cowell tight T-shirt shopping,’ said Peter Griffin in a statement, with Homer adding: ‘Finally I can get my hands on this guy!’

There’ll be plenty of time for speculation over character crossovers, with The Simpsons Guy set to air sometime in autumn 2014 in the US and likely to follow soon after in the UK.

Still fan of both shows, I have really enjoyed season 23 of the Simpsons, I been bit of improvement and but I Do find me laughing for at The Family Guy at the more, with their dark humour!

I be looking forward to this.

To be honest, both shows had jumped the shark long ago, so they're welcome to each other. But just in case you weren't sure just how desperate a move this is, there'll also be a separate crossover with Futurama:  :(

The upcoming Family Guy/Simpson’s episode may be an hour long and it just might (whisper it) include a chicken fight between Peter and Homer.

The cartoon mash-up is expected to air as an hour-long premiere to open the new season of Family Guy next year and Rich Appel, currently a co-executive producer on Family Guy and formerly a producer on The Simpsons, has hinted at what may be in store when Springfield and Quahog mix it up.

"[The crossover is] gonna be the season premiere in a year, but it's a super-sized episode - it may be an hour episode," said Appel.

"We were thrilled - Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Hank Azaria, Yeardley Smith, Nancy Cartwright . . . they all play their parts."

Appel says that the special was penned by the Family Guy writing staff, with just "two notes" from Simpsons execs Matt Groening, Al Jean and James L Brooks.

"As soon as Dan opened his mouth with his first Homer line, there was a wave of applause," Appel said of the first script read-through.

"[And] there may or may not be a 5-minute Chicken fight between Peter and Homer!"

The Simpsons will also cross over with another Matt Groening creation - the constantly endangered animated sci-fi comedy Futurama - in an upcoming episode.

a chicken fight, a chicken fight? this is clearly a last ditch attempt to boost ratings by taking the gags that were initially hilarious but that became boring and over-used/repetitive over the years....

Apparently Family Guy producers are killing off a major character this season too. Guessing Mila Kunis has realised she has become too big for the show!

Big Mistake, I think. a lot people saying it going to Brian, I really enjoy his double act with Stewie" but I do think it could be Chris, as there are only few episode that really about him, (I don't think they know what they want to do with him) I think Meg as more episode by her! :D

Maybe it start like this :D

I can't imagine it being Brian, as he plays quite a major part especially with Stewie. That said, the producers did say they would be bringing in a new character to replace the killed off one - possibly a new dog/pet to replace Brian, voiced by Seth again. Still wouldn't be surprised if it is Meg though, Mila has become quite big the last few years, she could easily move onto other things after.

It took The Simpsons over twenty years to get as unfunny as Family Guy. Now the Simpsons practically is Family Guy. It's just a bunch of random events with terrible jokes thrown in whereas it used to have a storyline with a beginning, middle and end.

I was looking at the description of a Simpsons episode that was on Sky One yesterday and it was the one that I considered the final nail in the Simpsons coffin - the episode where Homer ran over a horse and then wiped the blood off the windscreen with his windscreen wipers. Homer has gone from being a lovable oaf to being an unlikeable idiot.

While some people might say "it's just a cartoon" I'd have to disagree. It used to be much more than that. I've recently been watching some episodes on Sky and it's actually sad to watch a newer episode straight after watching one from the early nineties.

The chicken stuff was never funny. Family Guy has always been painful to watch and The Simpsons has been brutal for 13 years.

Funnily enough I find American Dad to be brilliant.

'Old' Simpsons had heart, emotion and genuinely well crafted observations about family. Homer, while an idiot, was well meaning and loved his family, despite often making bone headed decisions; he was the quintessential loveable dope.

Homer now is a complete psycho, and utterly hateful / selfish. Weirdly aggressive too for some strange reason, worlds away from his past incarnation. To the point where his marriage to Marge just feels disturbing.

    That's an old episode.
