    Well lads,

Myself and a mate are heading over to Tenerife for some training in the next while, we're staying on the South Coast (El Medano) and would like to base our training in and around Mt.Teide.

Does anyone have any tried and tested routes they could recommend? Or any tips like which roads/villages to avoid etc?

    Any help appreciated,

    Conor.

I was there on a holiday with the gf earlier in the year and got the go ahead to rent a bike for a few days.

Pretty much any road you take will be uphill, and all decent roads up to Teide.

El Medano - Granadilla - Vilaflor is the most direct from where you are, all roads converge at Vilaflor anyway and there's only really one road up to Teide.

Try going across to San Miguel and up to Vilaflor that way, the road between San Miguel and Vilaflor is like a race track its so well surfaced!

One point worth noting is that the air gets pretty thin up past Vilaflor and you'll find yourself lashing through H2O, so make sure you stop to refill in Vilaflor, regardless of how little you've drank before then. There are no stops between Vilaflor and the Teide visitor centre.

Also, Teide is a fairly vicious climb, you'd be going well to climb it two days in a row...

My experience of the island is based around the north (Puerto de la Cruz) but you should be able to get most of the good routes from here

the fella who runs the site (Leslie) should be able to answer any questions you have.

To be honest teide is not the be all and end all. I climbed teide from all 4 major directions over the course of a couple of weeks and it is manageable from all sides as it is just a constant slog but the routes around masca and anaga are much more challenging and scenery was stunning.

When i was there (3 years ago) it was ok to bring your bike on the bus if you are caught for time and want to start your cycle away from your accommodation.

I have to admit the north is much quieter traffic wise than the south but never had much of a problem with traffic but i was there around christmas time.

Both times I was there I stayed in Los Americas. In general, once you get away from the coast, the roads are MUCH quieter. They are exceptionally busy near Los Americas and Los Christanos.

This is the nicest piece of tarmac you'll find anywhere in the world:

It feels very Alpine and is without doubt the nicest climb I've done. I've been to Tenerife twice cycling and I've done this climb 6 times.

Avoid this route to the top of Teide - surface is VERY poor, even by Irish standards.

    33km @ >6% average ... it's a slog but well worth the effort:

Road surface is excellent, once you get past Arona (9km into the climb) there isn't too much traffic.

This is the climb to Villaflor from El Medano

You're still 12km from the top at that point Villaflor. The 12km stretch from Villaflor to the top is nice, lots of tall pine trees for shelter from the wind/sun.

It can get very windy over there at altitude.

Careful riding the mountain roads on the north east. They are very scenic but often are in the clouds so visibility drops to 5 ft or less. Throw mist into road tunnels and you've got the most frightening conditions.

If you want a change from climbing Mount Teide, awesome though it is, the climb up to Erjos, via El Retamar and Santiago del Teide is also terrific. Not as high, I think Punto de Erjos tops out at around 1200m, but another stunner on a good road surface.

Drop into Bike Point in Medano. They should be able to give you some advise. Probably will try and flog some tours, but they seem friendly enough.

Its in the middle of the town.
