Professional gamblers?

I'm just wondering does anybody gambling on the likes of roulette actually do it as a full time occupation or just play it to try and win some extra cash?

Plenty of professional gamblers out there, but roulette is probably the worst example/area you could have mentioned, the houses edge is over 5%, whereas blackjack and Poker are games of skill.

Roulette house edge is 2.7% in Europe, only 5.3% in the US.

Blackjack is a game of skill only when counting cards. Otherwise the house edge is unbeatable.

5.26% in the US (2/38*100 compared to 1/37*100)

The house edge in blackjack is less than 1% using only basic strategy and the edge is lower the less decks being used, any competent player can beat the house edge consistently.

You beat me to it! Of course 5.26% is correct for almost all the bets in US Roulette.

With basic strategy which involves a certain amount of card counting, but its not nearly as complicated as made out - you don't need to be a rainman type character - there are some very basic forms of card counting, abviously the more complex methods are more profitable.

Have a read of that for starters, but really its like any other game practice practice and then practice some more.

The ability to count cards competently is greatly affected by the number of decks been used by the dealer.

Also whilst not illegal, if a Casino suspects you of card counting or you are a consistent winner, you will be simply barred. They have the right to refuse anyone, the player has very little rights really.

US Casinos use Single and Double 0, Europeans use Single 0.

Yep... hence the difference in edge quoted above... almost every bet on US roulette has a massive 5.26% edge.
