If I had known all of that I wouldn't have bothered.

After reading the above it's not too bad, as someone who hated 8 with a passion I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised with 8.1 so I'll go now and eat humble pie.

Ive got 8.1 on my Surface RT, and its great, a few apps have developed a few weird issues as a result of it, but nothing major.

One thing I'm discovering though is the HUGE improvement to the Music, which was diabolical previously, it works pretty well now!

the better customization of tiles is nice on a tablet too.

The large 4x4 tile kinda sets the stage for the next version of windows - I doubt it will happen in 8 at all - where you will actually be able to interact with some app tiles there on the homepage without having to launch the full app. So.. Widgets. There will be widgets.

I downloaded Windows 8.1 onto my laptop & it was working fine. Then I got a messege saying I had no anti -virus installed
I googled the issue & 8.1 is not compatible with Norton
I talked online to a Norton Tech - he said to install Norton Beta
I did this & the whole system crashed (thankfully Toshiba auto re-installed itself, but all my programs were missing. Documents, Pictures & Music were fine)
I eventually found all the programs in a folder "Windows.old"
The ones I couldn't copy into the new C drive (iTunes etc) I had to re-install from the websites I originally got them from
Eventually I was able to delete windows.old & get lots of space back

Well the Norton Tech guy was helpful
He said if Norton Beta didn't work, he would freeze my Norton account until 8.1 is officially rolled out
He could have been fired for saying "in the meantime - use Windows Security Essentials"!

He made sure the customer had some form of Anti-Virus protection installed, good advice.

Norton lost most of its polish from the 2006/2007 rebuild of its software. Its still decent, but its competitors are peeling way ahead of it. If you're gonna pay for something, pay for Webroot etc.

That said the malware market for a preview OS is going to be relatively minimal. Typically even if a malware author did find a vulnerability, they would leave the vulnerability alone until full release, when the userbase would skyrocket. That, and most people on a preview OS are not your average victim to begin with. Some things of course are still pretty aggressive and from what I understand are hard to pin down what their root cause is, like the FBI virus (or what you all might recognize as the Gardai virus) which can have dozens of insertion methods (flyby download, spoor shareware installers etc)
