Did he upload the log files or did he just take a screenshot? I'd take anything from 4chan with a pinch of salt, especially when there's no other proof of it.

    Valid point

Maybe it's explained in the pics that I didn't read but what system has an uptime of 4 years? No power outages, crashes etc. I find that unlikely at best.

I just recompiled Quake 3 vanilla from the source there with a high delta value. I started a bot match on DM6 with 16 nightmare bots. After what equates to aboout 1 month of play the bots are visibly less agressive, after about two months they are just standing around. Pretty cool.

The moral of this story is reminiscent of the point made by many people on the thread about the cop killing the Rottweiler.

All of the world's problems are because of us.

You guys know this isint real right?
Look at the files in the folders, this means he was using win7 from 2009 to 2011 constantly.
(Also, who runs game servers on windows)
The bot file sizes dont make sense. Why are there 2, why do they max out at 256? Normal bots dont create files starting out at 256. None of this adds up.

IF anything in this story is true, then it sounds like the bots just ran out of memory and stop moving, and he lied about them attacking him.

Who cares lads? I want to believe the future self aware computers will be pacifists and all they'll want to do is smoke jazz fags with flowers up their holes.

If anyone hasn't heard of "BEN Drowned" (the haunted Majora's Mask), then they should definitely check it out. Fake or not, it's an intriguing story.
On September 7th, 2010, 4chan[6] user Jadusable posted a thread about his experiences with a haunted Majora’s Mask cartridge for the N64. He explained that after receiving a suspicious looking Majora’s Mask cartridge from an old man, he went to his dorm-room to play it and noticed it had a save file named “BEN” on it. He decided to ignore it and created a new file, but during the course of the game characters would refer to him as “BEN” at various moments. Figuring it would help the problem, Jadusable deleted the “BEN” save file, but this caused characters to not refer to his name at all. He then attempted to perform the “4th day glitch”, a hack that allows players to get an entire extra day to the game, and was ported to the Majora boss battle at the end of the game. He noticed that text was being displayed incorrectly, and the music being played was a reversed version of the game’s “Song of Healing” before being ported back to Clock Town. At Clocktown he discovered that the textures were missing, the music was distorted and the town was empty of the normal characters. He began posting links to YouTube videos he claims to have recorded while playing.

hmmm....I used to look after a Proliant 3000 that was never rebooted during the entire 3 years I worked for the company.

    Wasn't a Windows system though :D

"I've read over the Quake 3 source and bots are programmed to react to players given reaction time and accuracy constraints and traverse nodes around a map. They are not self learning, they do not aggregate information for use later. It's a cool story, but unfortunately, not real."

    Sorry guys

Even if it was real, it would depend on how they were programmed. All the original story would tell us is that programmer forced the bots to learn to achieve balance (between number of kills and times being killed) which would allow them all to learn to achieve balance eventually rather than to kill more times than being killed.

It's fake...but that doesn't really matter in AH.
Update: Alas. As we suspected (see our note at the end of the original story), it appears that this wonderful tale was too good to be true. We've been tipped that the original post was actually a joke, and that it was subsequently taken too seriously by the Internet - and, well, us. Apologies for those who found hope in the tale, but we still feel there may be a lesson in it for humanity, somewhere. Put down the guns, Quake 3 aliens, robots and killing machines. All you need is love - and a taste for viral internet humour.

It is true though, its funny how the new insertion of the human element to the game made ALL the machine turn on him to wipe him out. Terminator anyone.

It is funny though, if you were to analyse human behavior and activitiy as an organism we would be a deadly virus. we multiply and consume and do not really give anything back to nature.

I hope machines never figure this out.

    Not true,

look at all the cool cars, bikes, boats and planes which will be left for the cockroaches when the last humans finally check out.......:D

This reminds me of when the original Japanese version of Pokemon reportedly caused kids to go crazy and kill each other because of the Lavender town theme.

Which you can listen to here.

Same as human players in most online FPS games unfortunately.
Fire rockets, flash bangs and grenades randomly around the map. Usually pisses them off enough that they run around and get nailed.
