Epic!! Quake 3 bots learn to live in peace and harmony

I just saw this on twitter and it totally made my day

    Background,
Quake 3 is a first person shooter video game where you had the option to play against real people online, or artificial intelligence computer 'bots' (or a mixture of the two)

Quake 3 was one of the first games to use complex learning algorithms where the bots would learn from the games that they play and adapt their strategy according to what tactics were most successful

Some guy set up a Quake 3 match with 16 AI bots to test out the new learning algorithms and then forgot about it. The game ran for 4 years before the guy re-discovered it and went in to see what had been happening in the game.

When he looked, he saw all of the bots were just standing there, motionless.
The objective of the game is to kill every other player as many times as you can and die the fewest times. These bots had all learned that the best strategy was not to fight. If nobody fights, nobody dies

When a human entered the game the bots still did not fight, they kept to their same strategy of non-violence, but when the human killed one of them. They instantly turned on him, all of the bots ganged up on the human and killed him, they didn't kill each other even though that is what they had been originally programmed to do!

This is epic on so many levels, not least because it's a real world example of the moral of the story in the film 'Wargames' from the 1980s where Matthew Broderick has to teach a computer that war is futile so he gets it to play Xs and Os over and over again until it realises the only winning strategy is not to play at all
here's a link to the twitter post

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

It is true though, its funny how the new insertion of the human element to the game made ALL the machine turn on him to wipe him out. Terminator anyone.

It is funny though, if you were to analyse human behavior and activitiy as an organism we would be a deadly virus. we multiply and consume and do not really give anything back to nature.

I hope machines never figure this out.

No, only when the human attacked. Otherwise left alone

It'd be fairly cool if it was true. What if the computer learned that humans are the real threat and must exterminate?

that was what i meant, they were not killing, even though it was the programming. it was only when the human element came to it did they murder him.

That's cool but. Are they not missing one of the key objectives of the game? Kill as many times as possible?

Yes, but the 'intelligence' they have acquired suggests that they realise killing over and over again leads to just more killing - it never ends. However, if you choose not to partake in the killing (i.e the game), the system remains stable/balanced. That's why when the player entered the game and killed one of them, they all targeted the threat to their co-existence.

Very, very cool and, in many ways, scary.

But also survive using the best tactics possible.

I'd imagine it would be something like a scene outta red vs blue,

bots looking around aiming, zooming in, looking up and down and then running to a corner

These bots don't get bored so it's easy for them to stand motionless. Most humans would find it hard to 'play' a computer game by not actually doing anything. I'd like to see who would win between humans and AI if there was a game in which there was a choice between killing and engaging in some other less violent game play as opposed to either killing or doing absolutely nothing.

Also... 24/7 stream of the server. Have 64 bots on a huge map, and see what they do :D

Give DayZ a go and see what happens in that scenario....

Be cool experiment to set it up again on different servers and see what happens. And to see the log files.

I would love to see a clip of these guys just standing there. Though it could just be another hoax like the whole haunted Majora's Mask thing.
