I have a netgear D3700V2 modem/router that I have connected a 500gb usb drive to for the purposes of a time machine backup. I have followed the instructions here to set it up, but when i get to step 4 on page 2 i cannot get time machine to see the usb storage as a place to do backups.

    can anyone help?

Macbook pro 13" mid 2012, latest version of ML.

Firstly you need to confirm that your drive is formatted for GUID or MBR.

Page 85 of the linked pdf shows how to do this. In Disk Utility select the drive ( not volume) as per this pic.

This example has two volumes on the drive. Note on the bottom right it tells you that it is GUID formatted ( partition type). Also note the options button bottom centre. When selected this choice is given

Your Netgear router will not recognise the middle option partition format.
