Seems to be made by Bresser, the same company that makes the Lidl binoculars. This appears to be it http://03487b0.netsolstores.com/bresser5mpgamecamera.aspx The manual doesn't actually refer at all to it's waterproofness, one way or another, which is odd.

Waterproof doesn't matter as you need to protect the lense anyway. Build/buy a security box so you can put it in fields and stuff and not worry about it being robbed. Make sure it's discrete! Standby time is pretty good so I don't see why it's not worth the 99 quid.

The post above yours suggests Aldi is better.

The Aldi camera looks identical to an old Ltl Acorn model that has been superseded. The new model has a drop down base incorporating the LCD screen and controls access. If I remember correctly they changed the design because of leakage problems. Looks like Aldi may have got a batch of old stock from somewhere. If you can place the camera where it won't get wet, or fabricate a cover, this is quite a good buy. I have the newer model and it cost me €170:eek: The Lidl model also looks familiar but I can't place it.

Yes, looks like the Bresser Game Camera.

There are a couple of customer reviews on the US Amazon site here, and a couple of example photos.

I've only used mine at close range - hedgehogs, wood mice, urban foxes, pheasants visiting feeders etc. Don't know what it would be like trying larger stuff further out. Maybe I need to do some tests....

In my local Lidl they've taken to just putting single samples some of the smaller, more valuable (and therefore attractive to shoplifters!) stuff in a locked glass cabinet. You have to ask a member of staff to get one out of the stock room for you.

Aldi in Bray had some left earlier today, I got one. Haven't tested it yet but it looks the part and comes with an SD card. A gamekeeper friend bought the Lidl model during the week and got pics of foxes, cats, walkers and a hedgehog.

I left my Aldi cam strapped to a tree overlooking a plank bridge over a mill race on a friends farm for a month. A lot of shots of branches swaying in the wind but also a Kingfisher, Rats, Badgers, Foxes, Moorhens, Blackbirds, Wood Pigeons and a blurred head that I think may be a Water Rail (I've seen them here before) and this:

My first ever Pine Marten? For scale, the plank is about 10 inches wide. This is the best of several shots of it, seems to be a regular user of the bridge. I've left the camera down there again set to take video this time.

South Kildare, near Castledermot. Incidentally, the grey squirrel numbers have crashed in that immediate area, so I wasn't surprized to see the Marten. In previous years I would have gotten a lot of shots of squirrels, this time only 1 showed up. Haven't seen any around the usual spots at all this year. I wonder if Mr Marten is responsible?:D

Terrific shot, That's really put it up to me! I have deer ( sika) , foxes , rabbits and of course cats captured on mine. Lots of action for about a week then nothing. I notice in a lot of the nighttime shots that the animal is looking at the camera and I think it's emitting some type of sound that is spooking them.

I'm going to shift to a new location and like you try the movie mode.

Unfortunately I'm a complete technophobe , I use an iPad and don't have a clue how to post pics or indeed links to same.

I've noticed at night an internal filter flips across the lens inside the cam when it takes a shot, something to do with the IR recording. It's not very noisy but animals with acute hearing would hear it, might explain why they are looking at the cam when the shot is taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,003 ✭✭✭Zoo4m8

Hmmm, that would explain that, and nights in recent weeks have been very still here with no other 'covering'noise. Thanks.

well apparently the pine marten is having an effect on the grey squirrel population, as the grey squirrel feeds at ground level the marten takes advantage of this...and now the native red squirrel numbers are on the rise...so 3 cheers for the pine marten

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^

no its definitely a marten you can tell by the white tuft on its chest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,319 ✭✭✭Half-cocked

Mink have much shorter legs too, more otter-like. I've trapped a few mink in the past and they don't have that creamy chest patch.

    And here is a Mink!

Not the Aldi cam, but a similar model.
