There is a lot in Tax to be fair. Just did an SFMA paper there only took four hours!!

4 hours is not bad! Only half an hour off the exam time! Would definitely take me a lot longer! Did you still need to use the notes much?

You don't buy or sell FRA's or options per se. They are over-the-counter agreements (although you can get exchange traded options) so you have to look at it as more of a contract negotiated between two parties for a set rate at a set time. You enter into the agreement based on what your expectations of the future interest rate and what you are trying to hedge against. E.g. you are borrowing and are worried the interest rate will increase from 8% to 10%. You negotiate an FRA (rather than buy/sell) with the bank agree say, 8% in 3 months time, there is no buying or selling. If the interest rate does indeed increase you will be protected and thus gain and the bank will lose and have to payout. You have obviously negotiated the contract in your favour to hedge against your own perceived risk. Does that help

The 'decision' lies with whether to enter the contract or not. If you plan on borrowing and expect interest rates to rise, then enter an agreement to protect against extra cost. If you plan on depositing and expect interest rates to fall, then enter an agreement to protect against loss of interest.

Ya my hedging notes are definitely going at the front of the folder...so confusing! I definitely need to start practising, still relying too much on the notes.

Any advice on how i should study it given the little time i have? Are there certain areas that come up regularly that i should focus on because its very unlikely i will get all the material covered??

Variance planning and operating and mix and yield are very likely and comp valuation( going by examiner report) and foreign exchange risk. But I'm not a great help I'm seriously behind with all of the subjects

My advice would be to focus on Company Valuation, Mergers and Acquisitions, Company in difficulty, business risk and variances.

I have done FX risk and am nearly finished interest rate risk and to be honest, they are very time-consuming, tricky and complicated, you could easily spend 3 days trying to nail them and from what I've seen they mostly come up as optional questions so you could dodge them.

But don't hold me to this if the come up as compulsory....

I'm putting in a lot more hours now than I have been, I'm doing about 9am-9pm but with a lot of breaks :-)

I'm wondering the same? I'm currently doing at least 8 hrs but not finding I'm getting enough covered as I'm trying to spend a day on each module.

Do u know why OSC is 200 and not 600?

hey guys, for fr, are you doing all the past paper question 1's to revise consolidation or is this wasting time as consolidation will only be a 25 mark question this year so do you think its worth doing them or would I just end up pulling my hair out and getting totally confused?! are you just doing the questions Margaret gave for consol?

I never even noticed but il check in the morn I'm so confused with that one :/ and rose I don't think I will have time for q 1s full day today and just got have way through Margaret's and that's using solutions I'm honestly startin to think I'm slowest studier in the world :/

That's what it is...just a typo I'd say. OSC should be 600 and the RE should only be 1200. At least you spotted it icon7.png

me too, questions take sooo long! and some of Margaret's don't even have many adjustments. just when you think your getting consol, you come across a question that just throws you off completely, i haven't been able to do one without looking at the solution either. Im dreading trying to do an fx consol!! :(

Audit- haven't done anything but passed the mocks and have good CA which along with some common sense should get me to the magical pass!

Tax- Praying that it will all come together for me on the day- only exam where there's no CA and closed book which makes it much harder!

SFMA- Did a week of study for the mock and passed it easily so hopefully my CA result will help me along with some cramming study!

FR- Done a lot of Q1 and consol's so hopefully will get across the line here.

Relying a lot on my CA results and hoping tax finally sinks in!

Wow!! That's really good! Fingers crossed all goes well on the day!

This may sound like a silly question....but why do so many people fail these exams? All I ever hear is people failing, repeating 2, 3 or 4 times, despite the fact they've studied really hard.

I have being studying hard, I have done a lot of questions but I have still convinced myself that I will fail at least 1 or 2 'just because' everyone does.

Are they really that hard to pass or is there something people are doing fundamentally wrong...not studying enough, relying too much on the open book, not reading the question? Has anyone spoken to people who have failed/passed to get their opinion?

I was also wondering why so many people who actually pass the exams all seem to get exactly 50% !!
