where does season 3 end in the books?

as the title suggests I am looking to find out where season 3 ends in the books? I read the first book but have not gone further since the tv show came out but was hoping to start off again where this season ends! is it simply a case of start on book 4 or is it somewhere in book 3?

It's all over the place to be honest, impossible to say like Page 541 or whatever. Bits from far into the 3rd book were shown whilst other bits from earlier have been held over until next season. Sevens Hells, there were even bits of Book 5 in this season.

It would be a million times more sensible to just read the books in order rather than trying to skip to a point.

I've only just finished reading the first two books and while the first book was pretty much bang on with the first season, the second didn't follow the same path in a lot of things - stuff in the second book only showed up in the third season and I'm guessing stuff that was in the third books was brought into the second season. I was hoping to be a bit more up to speed with the books but life and work is kind of getting in the way but I'm still enjoying them because they give a bit more colour and background to all the characters you encounter in the series. Personally I think there'd be nothing to be gained from jumping forward in the books.

Yep, way too many changes happening after season 1 to even try and dive in mid-way through. Characters have been merged, re-named, replaced by new ones or written out completely. It'd be a head-melt trying to figure out who the hell everyone was, nevermind wtf was going on!

A simple solution to your conundrum is to just start on book 2 "A Clash of Kings"

You'd be crazy trying to jump in where the show left off, after book 1 there's massive differences between the books & show.

I have read A Storm of Swords: Part 1, with the intent of reading part 2 soon enough. Would it be safe to watch series 3 before I read Part 2?

Safe, as in you don't want the book spoiled by seeing stuff in the TV Series?

Then No, read the book. There are loads of scenes and major plot happenings from ASOS Part 2 in the series just shown.

I was going to say you'd be ok reading about halfway through SOS but at that stage I'm not sure it'd be possible to stop

The show in a lot of ways summarises big parts of the book or tells them from a different perspective, for instance in book 2 I'm sure you noticed how little we actually see of Robb and how the Tullys, Reeds and Freys are far more prominent before you even meet most of them in the show.

Similar to the OP, I'm thinking of starting the books but would prefer to not spoil the tv series. so would that mean go no further than book 2? Or could I get through the first half of Storm of Swords?

Honestly I'd be more worried about spoiling the books from the TV show, the books give you far less obvious foreshadowing for big events and after watching the show after reading the books there is no comparison to which is the better medium. The books are insanely superior, so far at least.

I was expecting that answer.

But I'd just prefer to stick with the series for the surprises, since that's how I started. Of course things may change once I get into the books.

I for one, being a die hard series fan, can confirm that i am really enjoying the books for what they are. I am half way through the first one, so i obviously know whats happening, but i am finding that the books are a hell of a lot more detailed on scenarios and are actually filling in the bits i have missed over the last three (well first atm) seasons.

I find that i have to force myself to stop reading through chapters and get some sleep..

I reckon they will merge some of a feast for crows into next season. Given that nothing happens in the first 400 pages or so of the book.

http://www.westeros.org goes into painstaking detail about which episodes match up with which chapters if you want to delve into that. Season 3 has generally been taken from Part 1 of A Storm of Swords but not exactly.
