Didn't see a thread for this (articles/blog posts) already.

Came across this article from Jeremy Keith on "Websites vs Web Apps". Thought it was absolutely bang on! Really good piece.

An excerpt:

In my experience, there’s an all-too-common reason why designers, developers, and product owners are eager to self-identify as the builders of web apps. It gives them a “get out of jail free” card. All the best practices that they’d apply to websites get thrown by the wayside. Progressive enhancement? Accessibility? Semantic markup? “Oh, we’d love to that, but this is a web app, you see… that just doesn’t apply to us.”

Average article in my opinion. The author is attacking a straw man. I draw a distinction between a web application and a website (or brochure site) but that doesn't mean that I consider it a dichotomy. I would think that most developers don't either.

Interestingly enough, Im having this debate currently in work. Invariably it ends up being philosophical, and enforces role segregation: historically, designers did websites, developers did web-apps.

It would be good to get some imperical analysis on what the industry deems to be one or the other, but thanks, I may refer to this article as a starting point.

Far from average though, it asks the right questions.

Also, +1 for "web thang"..
