Is it possible to to replace/rename a .dll file while being used, specifically the wsocks32.dll which has been corrupted by W32/Hybris.gen@MM?

what os are you on, with 2k or xp boot to the rescue console of the install cd and do it, with 98 and all boot with a dos disk and replace it. Dont think you can do it when teh system is running, try renaming the file, but i dont think you will be able to do so except using the methods above.

    Try safe mode.

    I presume that you're referring to winsock32.dll (not winsocks32.dll).

You certainly shouldn't be able to just write over a .dll while it is in use.

Random google ... looks promising if you're running 98.

Google might throw up more wonderful ideas, but replacing it from a CAB looks about right. (there seems to be self extracting archives to replace it from safe mode (make sure you boot without networking) )

If you are running Windows 98, try renaming the proper version winsock32.new , put it in the appropriate folder, reboot into dos and delete the old one and rename the new one back to .dll.
