Wow thats hard luck Whelan. Did the vet pull or C section
Have successfully turned a few before and never done any harm. We had a vet like that here and eventually told the practice not to send that particular person no matter what.

pulled it, senior vet handled her there and he said it couldnt have been the calves foot that made a hole that big, said to get her put down.... too much damage:mad:

I was just going to ask was it the calf's back leg that perforated the womb. You're supposed to cuf your hand in under the back hoof and pull back, aren't you?
I've never done it, so can't say. Any calves coming backwards here, legs have always been right.

senior vet said he couldnt understand how it is so damaged... i only handled her felt the tail and rang vet... you wouldnt think there was anything wrong with the heifer looking at her... you can put your hand through the side of her womb and feel her side iykwim

I don't know the full story, but have you lost cattle because of poor workmanship from your vet? Check it out, but I think you can claim from his/her insurance if they are wrong. I am almost sure you can, but check it out. If the vet was wrong, they are wrong. They won't want to loose you anyway.

    As I said, I'm not 100% sure.

Sorry to hear that Whelan. Whenever I get a new vet out here I always tell them about the old farmer meeting James Herriot for the first time and he says

''You'll fill a ten acre field with carcases veterinary before you're any bloody good''

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

what would the story be if the bvd test on the calf that was born dead came back empty, now that the mother is gone too, she cant be tested?

Sure what does it matter? Neither can spread BVD to other animals. Might be safe to check with the dvo to make sure that they do not come after you for not testing a calf and explain the situation to them.

Good luck. I bet there will be a bounce in prices due to the weather. Even good weather on the day of a sale makes a difference, lads are in better mood!

Are you not using AA bull on the heifers? Or do you have the laziest heifers in the country, too posh to push?

I have a February calf (<3 months in this photo) - also from a tiny heifer - who if his late mother was still with us - would be coming up to her shoulder now..

had an autumn calver with tetany this evening, went loopy in the parlour, gave her a bottle of magnessium and shes ok now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,396 ✭✭✭✭Timmaay

We usually get the one or two cases of tetany a yr, but nothing so far thank god! Do the higher yielding cows tend to get it moreso? They are getting 6kg of nuts, the rest only 2kg a day. Have some extra minerals going into the water also, not at the full rate though.

Whats the cheapest spray for docks etc? Want to spray the silage in the rented land, but I don't want to spend too much on it, as we are only renting it short term.
