Another box?....square this time it seems, hard to tell but looks a bit smaller then the XOne.

to me it looks about the same size as the ps3 slim

Are they still promoting that projector thingy that supposidly extends your screen?
That looked like the biggest pile of crap gimmick since the nintendo power glove

I think, looking at both reveals as a statement of intent, Sony has appealed to me a lot more.

There's almost been a role reversal between Microsoft and Sony since the launch of the last consoles. Microsoft, with the 360 courted developers and indie developers, pushing it as the ultimate gaming machine, whereas as Sony were a bit arrogant after the PS2 and really pushed the entertainment side.

In the last few years Microsoft has seemingly alienated a lot of indie developers whereas Sony have really picked up the slack.

I think that it's almost going to become like the way the movie industry, Microsoft representing big blockbuster mainstream, whereas Sony are going for indie and their own exclusives. Obviously it's not going to be as clearly defined as that, but with EA switching sides with their strategic partnership, Sony really has to carve out a new market for themselves, and by focusing on games, they might be able to do it. Even the ps4 social hooks seem to be gameplay driven. The Gaikai stuff could be a big draw too. If Microsoft don't have a streaming service, Sony could really be at the forefront of a game subscription service and become synonymous with game-streaming, the same way Netflix is for movies.

I've been hearing people asking how Playstation Plus will work with the PS4 without a catalogue to draw from, maybe that's where the streaming comes into play.

As it stands, in terms of unanswered questions I have about both systems. Most of my questions about the Xbox one come from a slightly negative standpoint, whereas it's the opposite with the PS4. I'm really interested to hear about the PS4 and excited about some aspects of it and I'm just not getting that at the moment for the Xbox one.

Obviously very early days, but in terms of the reveal, the introduction to the console and as a statement of intent, Sony is much more interesting to me. First impressions tend to last too. Sony may very well pull some of the used game, always online stuff, but have been cagey about it, which was clever because it made the initial message from the Sony conference be pretty much about the games, and all the new features of the console. Microsoft are starting to get mired in a quagmire of activation fees and always-on internet connections.

I think Sony not showing the console was a shrewd move too, as they were able to release that teaser video, just before Micorsoft's reveal, and it's given a nice big question leading into E3, of what the thing is going to look like, which is the shallowest type of hype, but could distract from the questions of used games etc.

Going into E3, on of the biggest questions for people is what the console is going to look like. Whereas the used game issue and connectivity issues are going to plague Microsoft for the next three weeks.

The PS4 reveal went on for 2 hours. I wonder if MS had taken that long, would they have got into the games

Eurogamer compared the two machines : PS4 and Xbox One

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-spec-analysis-xbox-one

I wasn't that keen in what Microsoft showed yesterday, its a very multimedia orientated box. There are so many aspects of the MS box that sound below par. It sounds good from a PlayStation point of view.

    Nice article.
Controller still needing batteries is weak.

That's actually a pro for me, I like easily replacing batteries when they fail.

Less on the fence, more into the ps4 now. Don't fuck it up sony!

I like plugging in a cable until it's charged. Batteries... That's only to make people pay for a battery pack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭FlyingIrishMan

I prefer the batteries built into the controller too. I got my PS3 about a year after release, its one of the fat 80GB ones. Still have the two original controllers both of them working perfectly.
With my 360 I use rechargable batteries but I don't think the method is as reliable.

A cool, less talked about features the PS4 has is the ability to charge controllers whilst the console itself is turned off. So just plug them in whenever the console is off and you'll constantly have power.

I don't get the connect every 24 hours thing. What happens if you don't? Is it like not entering the numbers in Lost? I only have my consoles plugged in when playing them, which isn't every day.

Maybe that's what they mean when they keep mentioning the cloud, could be the Smoke Monster. Kinect being its weird clicking eye thingy, reading your emotions, sensing your deepest darkest secrets.

"If you fail to connect your console in a 24 hour period your family will hear distant screams and rustling of trees before finding you the next morning hanging from a tree,"

EDIT: Which would also explain why JJ Abrams appeared in the opening video.

Here's another monk up from that teaser, ugh.

Looks like some kind of weighing scales.

I preferred the other one, but these are just what people are imagining.
I hope there isn't anybody who is taking these as the actual design.

Nah, gamestop. I was in extravision today though. Picked up uncharted 3, starhawk and tekken vs streetfighter for 30eu. Starhawk and uncharted had online passes not used too. I am happy as pig in ****! :D

Just having a read of this and noticed there is no wifi mentioned:
    http://webassets.scea.com/pscomauth/groups/public/documents/webasset/feb21/pdf/playstation4_specification.pdf

Checked a few other spec sheets too, no wifi.

Don't like that - am the lenght of two rooms from my router.
Hopefully something will be mentioned sooner to release date.

    EDIT:
    Is
    IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
    another name for wifi?

can't see wifi not being there, it's de-facto these days.

That sounds annoying. Why does it need to do it?
I know a few people that never had their consoles online and never intend to.

That is very handy. You'll never be caught out a discharged controller again. Often thought that it would be a deadly feature on the PS.

Sony properly trolling MS - just after their reveal, they come out with this:

it's not trolling, half the time that a game is shown or mentioned at a console event people start thinking that it must be exclusive regradless of all logic that says otherwise.

In an IGN poll 75% of respondents were disappointed with the Xbox One. Thats a pretty high number. You would never expect such a response for Apple.

Sony still has to state RRP for the PS4. If it was cheaper than Xbox One it could be as successful as the PS2.

When will they get it; you buy a console for games. We have SKY and Chorus for TV. Wish they'd focus on that instead of adding crap to it that no one wants.

Also what is the buzz with the Blue Ray disk drive? Muck is what I say.

TBH, as big gamers I think we are all jumping the gun a bit. I'm not sure who Microsoft was addressing the other day but a lot of the more tech media outlets were happy, even impressed with the Xbox One.

It's not going to just go from neck and neck with PS3/360 to gone. It'll still sell.

Anyway E3 is where they will be really judged. They made a bold claim with 15 exclusives and they absolutely have to bring the goods. If over 50% of those are Kinect games, they can forget about the core gamer.

As someone who uses his PS3 almost as much for movies as for games one of these new consoles not being blu ray compatable would have made my decision straight away for me.

Been an xbox owner in the past, currently a PS3 owner. I'm pretty much on the fence at the moment. I prefer the xbox controller to the playstation one, and liked the xbox's ability to install a game from a disc to the hdd, but apart from that the PS3 has been my preferred system.

Price is going to be a big deciding factor for me, and can see myself sticking with the current generation until the first big price drop on the next one.

It looks like we've won this year! :p

Xbox One thrashed by PS4 in GameSpot's global Twitter poll

    xbox-one-ps4-gs-poll.jpg
It's only been official for two days and already the Xbox One is losing to the PlayStation 4 -- if only on Twitter. Our sister site GameSpot has created a nifty poll that monitors the social blathering site for supporters of the two consoles and found a whopping 89 per cent favour Sony's machine.

That support is totally global too -- not a single country favours the Xbox One. Even France, whose tweeters make up 12 per cent of Xbox supporters, plump overall for the PS4. Those stats are based on people who include geolocation information in their tweets, so it might not be the whole picture.

Countries including Kosovo, Western Sahara, East Timor and Somaliland have yet to register any preference, although Sony will be delighted that key markets such as Rwanda, Armenia and El Salvador are solidly behind the PS4.

The poll is ongoing -- to show your support for One or the other, tweet #GameSpotPS4 or #GameSpotXbox. As you can tell, the hashtags are specific to this poll, so the map and percentages don't take into account people tweeting other console-related hashtags such as #XboxReveal or the waggish #Xbone (which is surely what everyone will call the thing, for ever).

The only complaint I seen from the Sony reveal was that they didn't show the console, seems even more trivial now that the Xbox one looks like a VCR.

Some of the ps4's features are far more impressive, especially being able to spectate friends and take over from them, time will tell if that comes to fruition, personally I thought a lot of the ps4 features were just pie in the sky from the gaikai team.

But absolutely nothing impressed me from this Xbox reveal. Same awful metro dashboard full of ads that I can't stand on the 360. Same kinect (that I got for free and never bought a game for). Same ignorant attitude towards indie devs...

It seems Microsoft are aiming at a user market that just doesn't exist, someone always online who pays for cable TV, and purchases movies and music on their console? They're telling us what we want instead of giving us what we actually want.

Everything about the Xbox one reeks of anti-consumerism, but that's nothing new for MS. Can't wait to see what they do with the avatars this time around, so many people willing to pay for that kind of crap is why they changed their target audience in the first place.
