Setting up a business - VAT question

    Dear all,

I am in the middle of setting up a small business as a sole trader and have a question about VAT ID.
At the moment I am still employed, permanent - full time and wish to start my business slowly in my spare time.
I read on the revenue website that you do not need a VAT ID if you don't make revenue more than 35k (goods) per year. I will definitely fall into this category.
At the moment I am researching for suitable suppliers in Europe and of course all of them ask for a VAT ID.
Could anyone advice if I can apply for an ID anyway or what would be the best approach?

Many thanks in advance for your answers.

    RG,
    Janni
