Right long story short, the torx screw holding on the front discs has sheared and is drilled out but still won't budge. So I can't drive anywhere til it's done, is trying to tap out threads again the only option short of a new hub?
    Help!

Personally, Id go looking for a replacement hub.
Those torx screws on brake discs are a nightmare, overnight soaking with penetrating fluid and an impact driver ftw.

You can get it drilled out and a helicoil put in, but its easy to make a balls of it!

penetrating fluid for 24hrs. At least. Get a torx head in a 1/4 drive rather then a screwdriver.

They are made out of play dough.. Same thing happened when we were doing the brakes on my housemate's M3. Handiest thing is to pick up a set of easy outs. And hopefully the new discs came with new torx screws? They did in our case

If it's under warranty bring it straight back to the shop and demand a replacement as it's a well known issue. Although, the one I'm using is an insurance replacement for a water damaged one so was a pretty new build when I got it two months ago. Annoying that it's showing the symptoms. Might ring the insurance in the morning and link a few xda threads...

Should be getting it back from FoneMenders today. If they can't fix it they'll replace it.

Thanks lads! I'll have a look for those easy outs today, the new discs came with new screws, so ****in annoying! One side took 20mins and we were at the other for almost 3hours!

Will the easy outs work even though I have the old screw drilled so it's the outer of the thread left basically?

Once there is a bit to bite on they will work. Just don't break the easy out in it. That's worse again.

Yeah thats what they are designed for, You should also pick up some brand new drill bits, and WD40, even a ****ty woodies set would do. Drill it 2mm,3mm,4mm,5mm etc up to about 7 or 8mm. Then tap in the biggest easy out that will fit, grab the easy out with a vice grips or a spanner that fits it and turn anti clockwise.

The easy outs are left hand thread, so as you turn them anti clockwise they are threading into the bolt, eventually they will bite and they will start to extract the bolt. They are magic, saved me on several occasions where I thought I was up **** creek

So that's how those things work! I picked up a set of those ages ago and could never quite figure out how to actually use them to extract broken screws.

You are welcome to these if they are useful Ardennes.. not sure if you will find the correct size there though!

Got a set a while thanks Red. They're nt working though, I can see the thread, I think but it's just half mashed up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

So do you reckon the thread pattern on the hub is shot or just bits of the bolt still stuck to it?

I wonder if it would be any use to stick a small wire brush on the end of a drill into the hole and run it in reverse. Maybe combined with some wd40 or similar.

Easy outs will only work if the bolt is still in there (like conzy said you drill a small hole in the bolt for the easy out to bite into) if most of the bolt is gone but the threads are still there, you might be able to get the correct size tap in there, screw it in half a turn with plenty of oil then remove, then a full turn and remove etc etc.
The only other option is to drill a slightly bigger hole and insert a helicoil.
Better yet, bring it to someone who does this stuff, (fitter etc) its a 20 min job for them.

Tbh, I still stand by my original post, try to find a replacement hub, handier all round.
