see the first loads of imported hay are starting to arrive into local co ops, anyone avail of anything similar, its pass the bale around here at the moment, i got 6 off me neighbour and gave 2 to another neighbour who is badly stuck, lads going in all directions looking for anything

see lads who let cattle out a couple weeks ago are now in a bad way,

I let some out to grass yesterday evening and have some more to let go today. Some more to go out either saturday or monday Secured 20 more bales this morning which will allow me to keep a few in for another week. Cattle going out to fields that were too wet to graze last back end, so grass cover isn't too bad. Hoping for a bit of strong growth next week!

    MT's take on it:
we are presented with two scenarios, one being a brief improvement mid-week followed by more showery weather although reasonably mild throughout (14-17 C), the other being a more pronounced warming trend with stronger high pressure although perhaps taking a day or two to take effect ... either way, the conditions through mid-month could be warmer than average but the question is whether that will be a slight or a considerable warming trend, then, longer term guidance indicates that whatever warmth develops will be replaced later in May by cold northeast winds again (due to retrogression or westward motion of the high pressure). Confidence on this is, naturally, rather low but that's the outlook we have at present.

Nothing inspiring in it is there?

Bord Bia inspection in 30 mins. Totally forgot, should be interesting.
Considering we have not slaughtered an animal in 4 years not too concerned. However like any test one likes to win.

Flew it 2 hrs. It was a good test of our system vis a vie a dept inspection. Scored 98% lost out on not having 2 tags in 100% of animals despite all adults having freeze brands.
He asked about vermin control I said cats, he then asked to see script for cat wormer which of course I had mislaid.
He was sound and told me he couldn't give 100% so hence cat and tags.
My office work used to be my weak point but he said he could find no fault.
Gas the way they must find fault.

Is it particular angus blood lines? I'm constantly toying with switching over to Angus but this would be a major turn off for me. How about the first cross BFRxAA? They seem to be a good cow and cross well with CH.

Have these type cows and all are pure pets, calving makes no difference to them. Just my experience. No drama with them.Found they crossed really well with ch, all mine came white or yellow but I'm told they can come mousy brown. Put part on them this year and they worked out very well(€1200 at 11 months). Have kilmoney Bruce and stq on them for next year so time will tell...

Bord bia were at one of our meetings lately and I challenged them about the cat thing, but he just said that over 95% were passing so its not a problem.
Like you I was marked down over the worm dose, the difference was that it's my neighbours cats that control the vermin here so it's not really my place to dose them but he insisted that I dose them and record.

Would a rotavator do the same job as a power harrow when reseeding or are they completely different

power harrow is 10 times better. our kuhn runs on the 1000 pto so much faster. breaking soil up lovely and leave a great seed bed behind it as the power harrow has the roller on the back.

Lads, these last few weeks have been very dismal on many farms throughout the country. Weather has been poor and fodder has been scarce. Naturally this has lead to a lot of problems for all of us. Tales of hardship, death, financial crisis etc have all been relayed here. In times of crisis, Farmers have always joined together to overcome and I'm sure that this is evident as much around your homes as it is around mine.

Crisis also brings frustration, and this is evident on this forum with loads of people having a go at banks, the government, farm organisations and worst of all each other. Personal abuse will not be tolerated on this forum. I accept that people are frustrated, but that's no reason to have a go at any other user. Warnings have been issued, and further will be issued if required. Bans will be applied if necessary!

    Please get along!

I'd be keen to make sure that they got enough colostrum - even if meant buying powdered colostrum for 1 day. If you're sure that they got enough, then it would be ok to give the milk replacer. Would a few dairy nuts for the mother not be an easier option?

mum probably has enough milk for them if they are very small. they will keep going to her to get a suck and you would be surprised how much she may milk

yea prob, they seem content and up and suckling, i tried milking her last night and there aint a lot there, calves could have had her cleaned at that stage, she is ped sim cow and usually has huge amount milk, this year she struggling a bit,

The best cow we haven't home has had 4 sets of twins. Looking at her you'd never think she would rear them. Like Bob said, a small calf is handy enough kept going. I wouldn't be making any great decision just yet if the calves look ok.
Get her out to a nice pick of grass, if there's such a thing about!

gave them some vitamin tubes this am and let them at her for a while

I reckon so you could do a lot of reseeding yourself if you just sprayed off then harrow then seed, would a normal twin disk fertiliser spreader work, could also get loan of a wagtail if their better, id say none of our fields have been reseeded in years
