I don't think you should have attempted 14 miles Zooming, you will do more damage trying to regain some off the weeks miles. You could do treadmill work out instead of the hills.

Yep no point in trying to catch up with lost miles, 14 was on my plan today as a step back week before next weeks final push upwards. Funny I felt grand in all ways until my knee went! Bloody hell

Just an update, was at osteopath this morning and my pelvis was out. Ouch!
I was at my GP just now re knee. He was unsure for definite about problem but thinks its CARTILAGE at side of knee giving trouble. He said to wait and see what Physio says tomorrow. Ideally I'm to rest. I have anti inflammatory tablets to take.
Fingers crossed, I've 20 to do on Sunday...

    Physio Report

I have Valgus Knee, and ITB syndrome

All is not lost, but I am not to run for a week. I can cycle and swim but not run, thankfully no ligament or cartilage damage.
I have some stretches to do and a bit of self massage, and go back next Tuesday for further treatment.
Im pleased and worried at the same time, I still can run this marathon, but I wont be hitting my planned 20 miles this Sunday which greatly concerns me.

I feel for you Zooming, Id just use the bike to keep the fitness up and when given the all clear repeat last week does the phyiso know your plans

Yes, he thinks I will have the fitness in my legs to do it after the previous weeks of training, but Im self doubting!
I will take the week off running and get out on the bike, actually I wrapped up my knee this morning as per advice from pharmacist and did 7.5 miles and it was ok, if Im on even terrain Im not bad, but on uneven badly tarred roads its awful.
Im just worried now that I wont have the legs to do it, but i need to rest the knee. All thoughts of time is out the window, if I come in under 6 hours i be happy at this stage to finish it!!

    Week 14 report

    SICK ALL WEEK
    Sunday 14 miles

I started off nice and slow today as I had been so unwell, felt ok, my eating still isn't back to normal which is no harm shift a few pounds lol miles 1 to 5 was great and I did that in a hour, mile 6 a twinge in my knee, of course I had chosen an unfamiliar route which was very hilly. Pain in knee got steadily worse even with my ITB support band which I adjusted every so often to see where it worked best. By mile 11 I was walking and just couldn't run anymore. This is my first injury and its bloody nasty. I walked the rest home feeling surprisingly happy!!!! I'm for Physio on Tuesday, I'm hoping that and painkillers will help me get to 20 next Sunday. Hills are a killer for ITB syndrome and unfortunately that's where I live. In my favour Edinburgh is flat!!

Any chance you can drive to a flat area?

    Hi,
Yeah actually that was my plan for sunday but physio has put the kaibosh on that. Will be back next week all being well

Did the physio say how it the injury occurred?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭zooming

He said its one of the most common injuries in runners, especially as the miles go up. Tightness in the ITB which attaches over the bony prominence at side of the knee rubs and inflammes the end of the ITB. For your own info

You seem to be having a bad time of it lately zooming- I hope it all comes good for you over the next few weeks.

Thanks! Yes Ive had a ****ty week. Physio said to me sometimes stomach sickness can be caused by severe stress. Obviously this knee/marathon was stressing me out and I got ill.
Im going to do all I can this week to rehabilitate this injury, I had a nice 7.5 miles this morning pain free because I wrapped knee up, but Im to rest now for a week. I intend to cycle and swim instead.
Next week I hopefully will be back on the road again.
I HAVE NOT lost hope for this marathon, I have 14 weeks done and Im hoping/praying that missing out on my 20 will not hinder me too much. Im not stupid enough to go against what trained professionals advise me and my physio says all is not lost!

Wise decision Zooming, the worst thing you could do now is go out and run and exacerbate your injury, that would surely be the death knell in your marathon hopes. Here’s hoping that a week of rest and some physio will sort it out. I believe using the foam roller on the affected area is very beneficial for an ITB injury, though I am far too much of a chicken to use it!

Try not to worry too much about the 20 mile run. Of course it’s nice to get that one under your belt - psychologically as much as physically – but it still is only one run out of the whole training plan. Don’t let the negative thoughts about missing it undo all your other hard work.

Cheers for that, I'm going to be a good girl and do EVERYTHING I'm told! :-)

Think I will start my marathon training at the start of June to allow for sickness and injury. At least you know there is light at the end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭zooming

Well this morning I started off with a load of foam rolling...OW!!
Im just after stretching and massage in my office (with door locked lol:D)
I decided Im not doing anything apart from my therapy for 5 days, at the weekend I will go out for a cycle to keep up my fitness, at this stage Im not going to do anything to wreck my chances of getting to that start line. Last night when I got in I did some rolling followed by ice and then heat finishing up with a bit of Arnica as per Physio instructions.

Next week I should be aiming for the following as per Hals plan

    Tuesday May 7 5 miles
    Wednesday 8 miles
    Thursday 4 miles
    Sunday 12 miles

    Tuesday May 14 4 miles
    Wednesday 6 miles
    Thursday 3 miles
    Sunday 8 miles

    Final week
    Tuesday 3 miles
    Wednesday 4 miles
    Saturday 2 miles
    Sunday 26.2
    :eek::eek::eek:

I am going to do my level best to get to that start line, when I look back on my wall planner and see all the days and miles that I HAVE done its amazing really for a fatty (well not just as fat anymore lol lol) to have got this far, really Id be gutted if I couldnt do it, but I think I have a good chance if Im sensible now and do what Im advised.
Thankfully at aged 42 I have a bit of mental strength to know when its time to hold off training and not go at it like a bull at a gate.
Ill be back ZOOMING round the roads soon
    :D

    Hi,
I'm feeling good, doing all my stretches, foam roller and taking meds. Back to Physio on Tuesday, and all being well back out running Tuesday evening. I have given this ITB rest since Tuesday so I hope it's sufficiently healed up! It's a very worrying time to be honest, tomorrow should be my 20 mile run but I won't be doing it. I'm hoping my training all winter and my rehabilitation will be enough plus the next 3 weeks to carry me round 26.2. I'm a nervous wreck about it all, but I think it's all part of the immense DRAMA that comes with a marathon. Very few people I have spoken to get to this stage in their training plan without injury, the question remains will I get round before the 6hr 30 cut off!! Lol

    BACK IN THE SADDLE!!

Well back on the road at least. After 6 days of rest I went out to try this knee for 5 miles. It was grand and not a twinge, fingers crossed that I have recovered sufficiently to get through the next 3 weeks training. I'm a bit worried as the pain normally kicks in after 6 miles, Wednesday I'm doing 8 so that will tell a tale. But I'm more positive about my recovery today. I'm back at the Physio in the morning and I can't wait to hear if he thinks I'm well enough. But I really have done what I was instructed to do so hopefully all will be well

Just back from physio and he thinks Im going to make it. PHEW
He says I have made a vast improvement in the week and has commended my resting/rolling/stretching etc he says most people dont/wont listen to him when he gives advice to rest and repair. Thankfully he seems to think Im going to be able for Edinburgh.
ITB syndrome as a complete BASTARD (pardon my French) but Im hoping I will be grand.
For anyone else having trouble with the ITB, common causes are the following

    Hill running
    Running on uneven terrain
Running on shoulder of the road
    Hip/pelvic tightness
    Need orthotics
    Increasing miles
    Increasing speed

    19 days to go

8 miles this morning and so far so good! I took it easy and didnt kill myself. The weekends 12 miles will tell a tale as to how she will hold up come race day (crawl day lol)

    18 days and counting

It shows great strength that you came back from that injury a lot of people would probably hang up there running shoes or go out and run on a injury and do more damage. 18 days left that flew by

Funny the physio said so many people do not listen in relation to letting their bodies heal. I try to do what Im told, I hope I have not compromised my fitness but I will get to that start (and finish) Im not worried about time, now its all about finishing, the sweeper lifts people that wont make the 6 hr 30 cut off..

Brilliant news Zooming, you definately made the right move resting by the sounds of it! Best of luck with the rest of your training and taper madness

Thats a scary list of causes of ITB problems, I tick a good few boxes, must get better at stretching:)

All feeling good so far this week, I have 12 to do tomorrow and that will be a tester! This time 2 weeks I will be in Edinburgh, can you believe it? It seemed like an age away when I began my training in January. Those long weeks really went by very fast when I look back over the past 16 weeks, its an emotional roller coaster, anyone embarking on marathon training will become a nervous wreck lol
Hope all your training runs going to plan?

    Week 16 report

This was my first week back after injury/beginning of taper

    Tuesday. 5 miles
    Wednesday 8 miles
    Thursday. 4 miles
    Sunday. 12 miles

After all my troubles I was nervous about today's long run. I got up early, ate a bagel and wore what I intend to wear on race day. Rock taped ITB and knee and had a support bandage. I actually felt pretty good! Mile 9 I had pain in knee, nothing like what I'd experienced on previous runs, I slowed a bit and it wasn't too bad till the end. In cautiously optimistic that I can do it! 12 miles in 2 hours 29. Pleased considering my issues. My training drops away off now in readiness for this day fortnight. Lots of stretching and foam roller for me!
