How is your grade calculated for the year in Trinity and other Irish universities?

    I'm aware that first class level means a grade of at least 70% in a given module, but how is it calculated for the year?

    Do they take an average of all grades; does First class require a first class grade in each individual subject; or is there some other criterion?

    It's usually the average of all your grades for the year. So if you average above 70% you get a first and so on.

    I have a mix of qualitative modules, where grades are generally not awarded beyond 75% and qantative ones, where they're happy to mark up to 100%.

    It seems to me that you greatly increase your chances of getting a first if you avoid any qualitative electives!
